Buttercup

It's been happening for weeks now. I'm falling in love with my best friend, Butch. I just can't help it, every time I look at him. I see how much love, and affection he can hold. I don't know what's happening with me. It's been a week since I had the incident with my father and Butch sleeping at my house.  I can't help my heart from racing faster and faster each second, I'm with him.

Another thing has been happening for weeks now. I've noticed Katie and Butch hanging out more often and often. Our siblings left today, we said good-bye and everything. Ever since our siblings party, they have been hanging out more and more. I didn't think much of it, I just thought they were friends, or Butch's flings that was there a long time. Not in a mean way or anything you know.

Today was another original day. Butch had his basketball practice today, and I was on the bleachers cheering him, since girl's basketball was over. This was the last track practice before their last meet. They won so many golds I've lost count after 30. Since the year is also ending up, and it's May, the last month of college. Which also means finals and test. Groan. One of my friend, Mitch was also there. Mitch, Butch, and I were all in a class together. We were cheering him on until I noticed the space next to me was taken by a familiar body.

I turned to see Katie just beginning to take a seat. "Hey Katie! What's up?" I said scooting over to make room for her. "Hey Buttercup. How are you?" She asked taking a seat, while smiling at me. "I'm good. Today is Butch's last basketball practice so I decided to cheer him on." I said, noticing Butch looking at the bleachers and then smiling that gold star smile. I waved at him and cheered him on, Katie was blushing for some odd reason. "Hey, Buttercup I'm going to go get some food or something." Mitch said getting up and leaving the bleachers. That leaves Katie and I.

"Buttercup?" Katie said looking at me deep in thought. "Yeah?" I asked still staring at Butch and.... how he's play. Ahem yeah, how's he playing let's go with that. "Do you like Butch?" Katie asked calmly. My eyes widened and I whirled my head at Katie. "Uh.." I stuttered not knowing what to say or do. "Do you?" Katie said looking deeply into my eyes.

"Hey Katie, Buttercup. What are you doing here?" I heard Butch come up to ask. I directed my attention to Butch, while I could feel Katie's gaze upon me. "Oh Hey Butch. We were just talking. What are you doing shouldn't you be practicing?" I asked. "Yeah but it's break time." Right on cue the coach yelled that break time was over. Butch ran back but turn around to smile. I didn't know if he was smiling at Katie or me, or maybe both of us. "You never answered my question?" I heard Katie say gently. I looked back at her. I couldn't speak, I just didn't know what to say. I stupidly shook my head gulping. After I gave her my 'answer', she said gave a small oh and turning to look at Butch. I was suddenly interested in the ground below me.

Why did I lie to her? Why did she want to know? Questions formed in my head until I shook my head, like it would clear my mind, and look out on the field. "I'm going to the restroom. I'll be right back ok." Katie said, smiling down at me. I nodded my head because I couldn't seem to open my mouth. My mouth felt like it was super glued. "So did you come here to look at the ground or see Butch play?" I heard Mitch coming up to me with two bottles of coke in his hand. He handed one to me, and instantly I opened it and chugged it down. It tingled in my throat, I finished the bottle, I got up and threw it away in the trash can near the bleachers. It felt kind of good, and I feel like I can speak now.

When I was headed back, I looked out on the court to find Butch missing. 'That's weird. Shouldn't he be practicing?' I wondered heading back to my spot. I saw Mitch looking at me with a shocked look. "What?" I asked sitting down, he was holding the bottle cap in one hand and the opened coke in the other. "You just chugged that down like it was the first coke you ever had." He said still looking at me shocked. I just laughed and looked back on the field to see Butch coming back from wherever he went. He looked kind of sad, like he didn't get a chance to say something to someone.
