A few weeks had passed since the lacrosse game and things were still going well for Lydia and her group of friends. Everyone had come over the day after the game to help her paint her room, resulting in everyone being covered in swipes of paint from their paint war. And of course her mom had to embarrass her by demanding the whole group posed for a picture to commemorate that day. Lydia couldn't be too angry because she loved the photo and put it in a frame to hang up on her wall. It was one of the few things she had decorating her room, that and a frame containing a poem she had found on her doorstep the other day.
You walk with the radiance of the sun glowing with your every step
Today was another regular Friday, and as always she was outside waiting for Stiles to pick her up with Malia in tow. When he finally arrived she noticed that he came from the other direction. Usually he came from Malia's house around the corner.
"Hey! Picking me up first today?" she asked him as she climbed into the jeep.
"Um no Malia's actually not gonna be in school today. She's home sick." he explained.
"Oh no! Did she catch that flu going around?" she inquired. He nodded his head in response before backing out of her driveway and heading towards the school. She absentmindedly played with a strand of her hair as they drove.
Never-ending waves softly cascading
They arrived at school and Lydia was still in her trance, thinking about that poem she found.
"Hey earth to Lydia!" Stiles said, waving his hand in front of her face. She looked up in surprise, finally taking in their surroundings.
"Oh we're here already?" she asked. He nodded with a confused look on his face.
"You okay Lyds?" he asked her, reaching out to feel her forehead for a fever. She laughed and playfully slapped his hand away.
"I'm fine silly. Just got distracted day-dreaming. Come on let's go!" she said, hopping out of the jeep.
Innocent eyes framed with full lashes
She was once again lost her own little world as the bell rang signaling the end of class. She quickly got up and made her way to her locker, dropping of her books before heading to the cafeteria where she got her food and took her regular seat at their table. She had her notebook out, planning on starting her assignment for english class. After awhile she floated back to dream land and ended up doodling long curly hair and big eyes with fluttering lashes.
"What do you think Lyds?" she dropped her pen in surprise as she finally tuned into her friends conversation. Stiles retrieved it for her and she looked back at him in confusion.
"What do I think about what?" she asked.
"I said what do you think about the camping trip? Do you want to come?" he asked her. This only confused her further.
"What camping trip? With who?" she asked for clarification.
"The one with all of us next weekend that I was just talking about. Are you sure you're okay? That's the second time you've completely zoned out today." he asked.
"Ya I'm fine, sorry. Just a little distracted today is all. Camping sounds fun, I'm in." she told him, making a smile spread across his face.
Gifted with the beauty of Venus
The final bell rang and she went through her usual routine of figuring out which books to bring home for homework before hurrying out to the jeep to meet Stiles and Malia, without Malia today. They both hopped into the jeep and peeled out of the crowded parking lot. She leaned back and soon enough they were parked in her driveway.
"Lydia? Anyone in there?" Stiles asked.
"What?" she said, being snapped out of her thoughts once again.
"Okay seriously, what has you so distracted today? That's the third time now." he reasoned.
"I'm sorry it's just I found something on my door step a couple of days ago and I can't stop thinking about it." she finally told him.
"Found what?" he asked.
"A poem. I've been repeating the lines of it in my head all day." she shared.
"What poem is it?" he wondered.
"I'm pretty sure it's an original. I tried searching it online and couldn't find any results." she explained.
"Can I see it?" he asked, looking down at her dream-like expression.
"Um I guess so, but you have to come inside. It's up in my room." she answered, hopping out of the jeep and walking up to her house.
The dream image of pure artistry
She led him up to her room and slowly opened her bedroom door. She dumped her bag on her bed and walked over to the frame on her wall that contained the hand-written poem. He studied it silently.
"And it'll only ever be a dream" she heard him mumble.
"I know, kind of a morbid ending. But the whole thing is just so beautiful. I have no idea who wrote it though. Know of any up-and-coming poets in the area?" she jokingly asked him. He scratched at the back of his neck while responding.
"Nope, sorry." He stepped back and looked around at her now entirely unpacked bedroom. He looked at the only other frame on the wall and saw the picture of their group from the day they painted her walls. He walked over to it and smiled as he looked at it. He looked at the way his arm was slung over Lydia's shoulders, hers wrapped around his waist with a care-free smile on her face. They seemed like one big happy family, and he couldn't imagine Lydia not being a part of their group anymore.
"No pictures from your old town?" he asked her. She looked down and quickly shook her head no. "Why not?" he pushed further.
"Just not something I like to think about." she mumbled. He sensed that this was maybe a touchy subject for her so he didn't ask any further questions. She sat on the end of the bed and started untying her boots.
"Okay well I guess I should head out. See you tomorrow?" he asked. She nodded her head and flashed him a quick smile which did nothing to reassure him that she was okay. But today clearly wasn't the day to ask about it so he turned and headed towards the door.
"Lydia what the hell is this?" her head snapped up at his enraged question, not understanding what he could be talking about. She followed his line of vision and saw that he was looking at her closet door, which was left open. Hanging their on the hanger was her winter formal dress from freshman year. She forgot that her mom had brought it up to ask Lydia if she wanted to keep it or not. She didn't but she hadn't gotten around to throwing it out yet.
She certainly couldn't wear it again considering it had scattered blood stains across it that no stain remover would ever be able to erase.
And it'll only ever be a dream
