We ate breakfast below deck, in a large room with a long table. Levi sat down in a big comfortable chair at the end of the table and he told me to sit next to him. The entire crew was staring at me. Then, a small girl with orange hair leaned over the table.
“I’m Petra,” she said.
She was the girl who had told us breakfast was ready.
The others told me their names too. Mike, who sniffed my neck, Oluo, Hanji, Erd, Isabel, and Farlan.
There were less people than I’d seen on other pirate ships, but they seemed like they were close.
“So, Eren,” Petra said. “How is it in Captain’s room?”
“It’s okay. A little small, but okay.”
“Small, huh?” Erd said. “Guess you are very close then.”
I was slightly confused. “Well, I guess, yeah.”
“That’s not what they mean, Eren,” Levi said. “Stop it guys.”
I realized what they meant, and I blushed. “It’s not like that,” I said.
The crew laughed.
Petra was the first one to say something serious. “Why do you find it small? Cap’s room is quite big.”
“It’s smaller than I’m used to.”
“I already told Eren he could walk around the deck.”
“What?” That was Farlan. “If he’s on the deck, he could jump into the sea any second. Have you even thought about that?”
“I won’t do that!” I snapped. “I promised Levi I would stay until I can grant him his wish.”
“And after that?” Petra asked.
I hadn’t really thought about that yet. I looked at Levi, who blankly stared at his plate.
“I- I don’t know,” I said.
“After that, Eren can decide what he wants to do. If he wants to go back to the ocean, I won’t stop him,” Levi said.
I won’t stop him.
No, he wouldn’t. But he would be heartbroken, just like me.
“I don’t know what will happen. I don’t have to decide right now.”
Nobody said something, and then, the silence got interrupted by someone pushing open a door.
“Sorry it took so long, guys! Breakfast is here!”
A guy with short, pointy hair walking into the room. He had to big plates in his hands. He set them down on the table. One of them was filled with fruit, the other one was filled with what I remembered was bread.
“And for our special guest,” the guy said and he put down a bowl with something green in it.
“Seaweed! Thank you,” I said and I smiled at the guy.
“No problem. The name’s Gunther.”
I said hi to Gunther and when he was seated, Levi told us we could start eating. The crew dug in, and soon everybody was chewing on their food. I was eating my seaweed.
“What does it taste like?” Gunther asked.
“Uhh- like seaweed.”
The crew laughed and Gunther asked me if he could taste it. I gave him a piece. I saw as he put it in his mouth and immediately started to gag. He took a big gulp of his drink.
“Ah! That’s salty!” He yelled.
“Well, yeah. It comes from the ocean,” I said.
People laughed again. Gunther took another sip of his drink and I realised there was a glass for me too. I picked it up. The smell was strange, not something I recognized.
“What is this?” I asked,
“It’s rum,” Levi said. “You should taste it, it’s good.”
I took a small sip of the drink. The liquid burned my throat. I coughed.
Levi handed me another glass. “Here. drink some water.”
I gulped down the refreshing water.
“That’s payback,” Gunther joked.
This time I laughed, too. I was starting to like the crew.
