Chapter Four
I put my phone back down onto my nightstand and turned the screen off. The silence returned, and wrapped itself around me. I walk to the clear glass windows, and open the glass doors to the balcony. As I walk out onto the terrace I try to decide where to sit. To my left I have a couch with a coffee table, and farther to my right I have a table with a couple of chairs surrounding it. I decide I will just stand, and I walk over to the end and peer over the stone fencing.
I was so alone. The buildings are lit up, but they feel empty. It's as if there is not a single soul near me. It hit me that someone could just be staring at me; someone could be watching my every move. They could be studying my facial expressions, or just pop out at any given moment. Stop being such a coward, I silently speak to myself. You're thinking of completely absurd things. None of that is real. Nothing is wrong. But something still feels wrong. That call felt wrong.
The noise. There was no noise in the background. How could it be? She was at a party. There would have been music and people. She could have been outside, Skyler, I think again. But still, there is something wrong. There was no wind. I felt the wind myself when I went outside! The wind would have for sure affected the call! Just forget it, Sky. I kept telling myself. I walk back indoors and close the window doors shut, making sure to lock them. I turn around to face the analog clock and notice the time is 12 a.m. It's time to go to bed again, and I change into sweat pants and a t-shirt, and go to sleep.
