Wrote before House of Hades

Annabeth sat in the pegasus stables, staring at the world that the world that flew beneath her. She had told Percy that this reminded her of their first quest… but it had a bigger meaning. If she died on this quest, she could remember the first time she and Percy had talked… for real.

She couldn’t be too careful.  As she traced her finger along the clear glass door, wondering how long it would be until she died, someone called from above.

“Annabeth?” It was Percy. “Where are you?” She sighed, stood and walked to the door. As Annabeth turned the corner, she almost slammed into her seaweed brain.

“Woah! Hey Per-” his face looked shocked beyond belief. Annabeth’s mood turned serious. “What’s wrong?”

Percy shook his head, “Wise girl, you’re going to have to see it for yourself.” Annabeth furrowed her eyebrows and followed Percy, who was climbing up to deck. Once Annabeth made it to deck, the sun almost blinded her. Since she had been in a dark room, the sun was a bright lightbulb. She looked away, and when she looked back, she realized the sunlight was being reflected off of a mirror. It was a full length mirror, like one a model would stare into for hours.

Speaking of staring into one, Leo was staring at himself, being almost exactly like Narcissis.

“Leo,” Annabeth questioned, “what are you doing?” He looked away and smiled stupidly.

“It’s the girl me!” he exclaimed. Annabeth stared at him as if he were stupid.

“What?”

“Come see.” Leo gestured for her to come look. Annabeth looked to Percy, but he nodded with reassurance. Annabeth slowly walked up to the mirror and glanced at her reflection. She yelped as she stared at herself.

She was a boy!

She was taller and more muscular. Her hair was shorter, but it came down to about her ears. It was still blonde and curly. She, well more like he, wore a camp half blood shirt, which was a lot like Percy's.

Annabeth stared in shock at herself. For some reason, she actually found herself cute... She looked away from the mirror, totally whacked out by the weirdness if it all. She also felt a little bad.

She turned to Leo, "Have the others seen it yet?" Leo shook his head, but he still kept his eyes in the mirror, striking poses.

"Nope. Percy and I were the first ones."

Annabeth turned to Percy, "The others need to see this. Maybe one of us will figure out what it is." Percy nodded and walked down the stairs. Annabeth touched the mirror carefully. “How did it get here?”

Leo shrugged, “dunno. There was a POOF then the mirror arrived.”

Percy came back up to the deck, Hazel, Frank and Nico in toe. Apparently they had been talking together.

“What’s going on?” Hazel asked. Annabeth jabbed her thumb at the mirror.

"This thing arrived. Anyone know what it is?" Frank stepped toward the mirror, then yelped.

"I'm a girl!" He squeaked.

"What?" Hazel asked, then she stepped toward the mirror. "Woah... That's creepy..."

Nico stepped in front of the mirror and his hard expression seemed to soften, which made Annabeth even more worried.

"Looks like some sort of gender bending mirror," he said, tilting his head back and forth to examine himself.

"But why is it here?" Annabeth asked. Nico shrugged.

"For fun maybe."

"Fun?" Hazel questioned. "How would something like this be fun?"

"I don't know," Percy said. "But we need to keep an eye on it. It may be dangerous." The others nodded, except Leo, who was still checking himself out in the mirror. Annabeth noticed that, then she had an idea.

"Why don't we just throw it off the ship?"

"No way are you getting rid of my sexy self!" Leo protested. Percy walked over to the mirror, but Leo grabbed it.

"Leo, let go!" Percy insisted, pulling on his side of the mirror.

"No! Don't take her away from me!"

"Leo! It's you!"

"But I'm a girl! A hot girl at that!"

Hazel stepped between the two of them and made the mirror come to her. It flew out of both boys hands and into hers.

"You two break it up," she scolded. "Leo, I'm going to break the mirror and you can keep a piece. Got it?" Leo sighed, but nodded. Hazel closed her eyes and concentrated. The mirror's surface began to wobble and bend until the whole thing exploded. Percy shielded Annabeth with his body and everyone else hit the deck. When Annabeth looked up, she saw Hazel standing in a pile of broken glass. Her hands and arms were bleeding, and there was even a cut on her cheek. Frank out an arm around her.

"Hazel, are you alright?" He asked. She nodded, looking down at all of the broken glass.

"I look odd as a boy," she muttered. Frank didn't say anything to that, but he helped her get out of the pile of broken glass. Leo opened his eyes and saw all of the broken glass. He quickly stood up and made his way to the pile. He picked up one of the bigger pieces then gazed at his reflection.

"Leo," Annabeth said. "You're going to die starring at yourself, like Narssisis." Leo looked up and shrugged.

"I still look hot." Annabeth rolled her eyes and turned to Percy.

"I think we need to go help Hazel. That glass must have hurt." He nodded. Nico followed Frank and Hazel downstairs. Percy and Annabeth were the last ones to leave, but before they left, Annabeth called over her shoulder,

"Leo, stop kissing the mirror!"
