I tap my fingers against the table as I stare at the black screen of my phone. I'm waiting on a call from my mom inside the deathly quiet living room of my apartment. She told me she would be going to the doctor's today to get things checked out. I offered to go with, but she denied my proposal. She should have been done an hour ago, and each passing second is growing to the peak of my anxiety. A call would be great right about now, mom.
Finally, it rings and I nearly drop it from the process of trying to bring it to my ear.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Hi, honey," my mom says on the other line.
"How did it go?"
She doesn't answer for a moment, a good three seconds of a moment. It makes me nervous, knowing it's going to be bad now because she's being hesitant.
"It was okay."
She's lying.
"Mom..."
"They said i-it, uh, it's a lot worse than it was before."
And there's the feeling of my world crashing down... once again. My heart not only breaks into two but into several pieces. I can't imagine how she feels.
"You'll be okay though, right?" I ask in a weak voice.
"I'm not sure."
I pull the phone from my ear for a moment to let out a quick breath of air, somehow finding a way to fight back tears. It's hard though, it's really hard. My throat burns and my eyes sting. I know my voice is going to be shaky if I talk anytime soon, so I try to take deep breaths to control that. I don't want her to feel worse about me breaking down because she has enough to worry about. I just got her back too...
"Elise, it'll be okay," she says in a soft voice.
No, it won't.
"Are you at home?" I ask. "Can I come over?"
"Of course. How about you bring your girlfriend over too if she's not busy, of course."
Natasha hasn't met my mom yet, but they have talked once over the phone. Although I'm positive that all will go well, it doesn't stop how nervous I feel about the two meeting. It's my girlfriend and mom; everyone should feel nervous about that, at least I hope so. I don't want it to be only me.
"I'll see what she's up to."
"Okay, want me to make something to eat for you two?"
I can't help but grin. "No, we'll both be fine. But thanks."
"See you soon then."
"See you soon. Bye." I hang up the phone and go straight to Natasha's contact. I hover my thumb over her smiling contact icon before clicking call.
It rings two times before she answers.
"Hello, beautiful," Natasha's alluring voice says.
"Hey, gorgeous." I smile at her choice of how she picks up the phone for me. Well, I hope she only does that for me.
"What's up?"
"Would you want to come to my mom's house with me?"
"I'm going to meet your mom?"
"Yes." I take in how nervous she suddenly sounds. "I asked if I could come over because she just got back. She asked for you to come too."
"Yeah, sure. I'd love to meet your mom. Awesome," Natasha says quickly. "I just need to change and I'll head over to your apartment. I'm driving with you, right? Because I don't know where I'm going. I'd hate to show up late. She'd think, like, bad of me or something if I didn't know my own direc-"
