The party was in full swing, it was like any other party on a Saturday. Someone's mansion full of drunk, naive, teenagers just trying to have a good time.
Well not just anyone's mansion, but the son of the Alpha, Xavier Black. Through a friend of a friend, I was invited. I came on a whim, deciding at the split second to come celebrate pre-birthday.
I know, no one goes out to celebrate for their own birthday before its even their actual birthday, but why not? Besides, the one pushing me to go was of course my best friend, Landon Ronan.
Landon has been my best friend since we were in diapers. Did I mention he's gay? Well now you know. He's not exactly the sassy fashionista, definitely more on the dominant side and like the over protective brother I've never had.
"How's it going, soon to be eighteen year old?" Landon was leaning against the banister of the backdoor steps, his muscles clearly evident underneath that white shirt and leather jacket he always wore.
"It's alright, I guess. I just needed to take a breather, too much dancing." I laughed, "What about you? How come you're out here and not partying it up?"
I wasn't much a party goer, this had to be only my third party. Landon, however, was a party animal. Don't tell him I said that, he hates it when I do.
But, let's be real here. Landon is higher up on the social latter but he still makes time to hang out with a regular like me.
"I wanted to find you, so I could be the first to tell you happy birthday." He gave me this grin that would have melted my heart if I hadn't already known he swings for a different team.
I stood up from my spot on the steps and approached him with my arms open wide. Landon glanced at his watch, quickly paced over and picked me up, swinging me in a circle, "Happy birthday Lexi!" I couldn't stop myself from laughing and grinning at him.
"Alright, alright. I got it, put me down." Being only 5'5, Landon easily towered over me at nearly six feet tall.
"Fine." Landon gently placed me down and gave me one last hug, "Let's go back in there and party the night away!"
As we walked back inside, I was hit with this woodsy, musky, yet sweet cinnamon scent. I stopped and stood rigid, forcing Landon to stop as well since he held onto my wrist.
"What's up? Why did you stop?" Landon was looking at me with this confused expression on his face.
"Do you smell that?" Landon scrunched eyebrows together giving me that 'Are you crazy?' look. I might as well be crazy to be honest.
But then his facial expression changed like he had this realization, he let go of my wrist, "Follow it." Now it was my turn to look at him confused.
"Follow the scent, stupid." He pushed me in front of him, through the threshold. "We'll get him back for that later, go." My wolf spoke to me, not pleased with Landon's choice of words.
As I continued to walk deeper in the mansion, I came to the corridor of the kitchen. The scent hit me full force and that's when I saw you.
"Mate!" My wolf was ecstatic. I was too, well at first. "What are you waiting for? Go get him!" You couldn't see me, but I had a clear view of your side profile.
You were wearing a black dress shirt with a pair of dark denim washed jeans. I took one step forward and instantly regretted it.
My heart was instantly crushed. Before I thought you were alone, but now I see you're here with her. She's sitting on the counter and you're standing between her slender smooth legs, your arms on both sides of her. Her head resting in the crook of your neck and shoulder, while you whisper sweet nothings to her.
But the worst part of it all is your smile. Its so beautiful, it hurts. Tears swell in my eyes as I try to back out the way I came. But my silent escape is not successful, a small whimper passes my lips. Almost instantly, you turn to face me.
We make brief eye contact as I turn and run away. The expression on your face, a face of regret, is engraved in my mind as I run with tears streaming down my face.
My chest burning in pain, it felt almost as if someone was clawing it out. My wolf was silent throughout the whole interaction, her happy mood reduced to one full of sorrow.
I wasn't looking where I was going at all, just trying to find an escape from the cramped space full of strangers. I felt a tug on my wrist, for a second I thought you chased after me.
But again I was disappointed. "Lexi? What's wrong? What happened?" Of course, it was Landon. I can't bring myself to turn around and face him. "Lexi? Look at me." Landon tugs a little harder on my arm, making me turn towards him.
The tone of his voice changes to a soft whisper, "What happened? Hmm?" He reaches out, holding my face in his hands as he wipes away my tears. I simply shook my head.
"Come on, let's get out of here. I'm taking you home." I immediately tug on his sleeve, shaking my head. "What do you mean, no?"
Not trusting my voice to be loud or stable enough for him to hear, I mind link him. I don't want my parents to see me like this. "Then where else can I take you?" Can I stay over at your place? Please?
Landon let's out a small sigh but complies. "Alright, let's go then. We'll talk about this once we get to my place. Are you well enough to walk or should I carry you?" Landon releases his grip on my wrist and I almost fall over from the lack of support.
"I guess that answers my question." Landon easily lifts me up bridal style, "Hold on tight, I'll get us out of here." I could have sworn I heard a growl from behind us, but decided to ignore it.
