23.  A Fraction of Power

Vaan was sitting on the edge of the fountain in the main courtyard of the school, cupping the water in his hands and tossing it to the other side of the fountains. He was waiting for an answer. Who kills Lizzy? When will she die? He tried to make himself see, he tried to understand.

One thing that really stuck out to him was that Danny, Lizzy’s sister, kept talking about Selena. Not only that, though. Danny had been talking about Selena like she was walking around the school like she was there.

He’d hardly heard her because Lizzy was oblivious to important things, but he knew Danny was using present tense. He’d heard that much.

“Vaan! News!” Came a voice from behind him and he turned his head around to look at Sophie who sat down next to him. “Hόla!” She said with a wide smile on her face.

“You said you had news?” Vaan said flatly. He wasn’t in the mood to sound particularly happy, and he felt bad when Sophie looked a little hurt by his tone. “The Olsen twins found a cave and it’s pretty freaky, but that’s not the best bit!” She said, trying to keep her happiness still in her voice.

“Then what the best bit?” Vaan asked, a little intrigued. He turned his entire body to face her and she smirked up at him. “I think I have an idea about the whereabouts of one said goddess,” Sophie gleamed. Vaan instantly perked up, “No way?!”

“Yes, way,” Sophie nodded. “Well, I mean, it’s just a theory, but I think it could work.”

Vaan smiled and he hugged Sophie, “That’s great! We gotta tell Song and Celeste, though, first.” Sophie nodded again, “Yeah, of course.” She pulled away from his awkwardly and stood up. “You’ll think I’m crazy, but I really think I’m right.”

Vaan shrugged, “Soph, I already think you’re crazy.” Sophie hit him playfully on the arm and the laughed.

Out of nowhere, a man in a suit appeared from behind a building. He grinned at Sophie and Vaan as he pulled a gun from his pocket. “I think I’ll get promoted for killing both of you,” He said.

“Doubtful,” Sophie said and she clapped her hands together and a surge of white energy burst from her fingertips, sending the man flying backwards.

Vaan’s jaw dropped, “That is awesome.” Sophie laughed, “Yep.”
