Am I ready?

I tap my nails on my nightstand. It was past eleven and I couldn't bother to get up. It wasn't that I was lazy, it was the fact I was scared. I thought back to last night, the huge party to celebrate me turning 18. It seemed unconventional to have a pre-birthday party as well as a birthday party but my father encouraged it. I knew my father didn't just want to celebrate my birthday, he wanted to help me find my mate. Tonight is the second event and I couldn't help being scared. My wolf was excited, that made one of us.

I roll out of my bed and onto the floor. I slowly crawl over to my closet and pull out some jean shorts and a flowery crop top. I got dressed and made my way downstairs to the pack kitchen. I smiled at my best friend, Cat, who had made me some mac and cheese for lunch. I laugh at her choice in foods, mac and cheese had always been our favorite meal ever since we were little pups.

"Happy Birthday Skyler!" I mumble a thanks you as I make my way over to the food. "You always choose food over me, I swear." she fake pouts. I swat her as I grab bowls and scoop out some mac and cheese for the both of us. I place both of them on the table and dig in.

She grabs her bowl and begins to eat next to me. We quickly eat all of the mac and cheese. "The party is tonight." I whisper.

"I know, I'm so excited for you! If only I was 18 so I could find my mate. You're so lucky!" she jumps up from her chair. "Your dad even got all of the neighboring alphas and betas to come. You're so lucky your dad is an alpha and he has that type of power. Those men were so muscular and sexy. Just remembering them last night is enough to make me drool."

'You're so lucky' that is all people have been saying to me recently. I don't feel lucky; I feel frightened. I'm scared for my future. There is no way of knowing what is going to happen. The uncertainty is enough to put me on edge.

I laugh at her, "You know you're going to be 18 in a few weeks. You should be saving your drool for your mate." I wink at her reddening face. She lets out a giggle and pulls my upstairs back into my room.

"We mustn't waste any time! We must make you look perfect." I groan and she thumps my forehead. "I'm thinking your black two piece dress." She makes her way over to my closet and pulls out the two pieces of the short dress. She eyes it cautiously. "This will definitely work."

She squeals in delight. "Sky you are going to look so hot." I laugh at her lame compliment. "We should totally do a smokey eye though but only after I know you're clean! Go take a shower you dirty pig!"

"You're so mean." I fake cry as I make my way over to the bathroom. She giggles as I shut the door.

"Don't forget to shave your hairy gorilla legs!" I'm so getting her back for that. I hop in the shower.

I come out of the shower and am immediately dragged back into my room. "Of course you would take over an hour in there! You always leave me no time to fix you." I giggle and put on the dress. I let Cat take over as she does everything else.

It's a little over an hour and a half over when she tugs me over to a mirror. I gasp at what I see. She did a full out smokey eye with winged eyeliner to match. She put my hair in loose curls and painted my nails a pearly nude color. "Thank you so much! You're a miracle worker!"

She mumbles a you're welcome as she starts to get ready. I help the best I can but I am nowhere near as good as she is. She ends up wearing an off the shoulder white dress that was mostly lace on top and flared out at the hips. She did simple makeup that brought out her icey blue eyes. I whistle at her and she just sticks her tongue out at me. We both slip on our shoes. I choose nice black flats and she wears strappy heels.

"We're going to be late! It's already 5!" she pulls me through the door and we both run to the ball room. I couldn't help the butterflies in my stomach as we walked through the large grand doors. Every head in the room turned to look at me. I felt a blush spread warmly across my cheeks. I shyly put my head down.

'Head up! Show them who you are!' my dad mindlinks me. I gracefully tilt my head up, still feeling all the attention I was getting. My cheeks were still tinged a bright pink. My eyes scan across the room. I put on my best smile as I walk towards my father as gracefully as possible. I've never been more self conscious. Everyone's eyes glued to me as I make my way across the room. I feel an overwhelming urge to cower away and hide from all the attention. I glare over to Cat, her shoulders are back as she walks tall gracefully and elegant. I roll my shoulders back and do my best imitation of Cat. I take my place next to my father and as soon as I sit, I feel the attention of the party drift away from me. I breathe a sigh of relief. The pressure was finally getting to me.

'Do you feel him yet?' I turn to Cat with my eyes wide. At least she said it through mindlink and not out loud...

'I don't.'  Cat sighs. I know she hoped I would find him tonight. She thinks your life can only be complete if you find your mate. I semi-snort to myself. Mates, the whole thing is delusional. I watch Cat look starry eyed at the whole party, obviously dreaming of one of the alphas being her mate.

I feel my dad's curious eyes on me. He wants to know if his party was successful... I turn my attention towards him.

'He's not here.'  I fake a saddened tone through the mindlink to my father. His eyes shift to the party and I hear his very audible sigh of distress. He really wants me to find a mate. I reply with my own sigh of distress. He won't be happy until I find a mate.

I won't be happy if I do.

Short and Bad, I know. Sorry!!
