What is happiness?

The party was past over, I was past tired. I watched as the omegas cleaned up my party. I watched as they put everything back in place, the party was slowly fading away as if it never happened. The alphas and betas had already gone home and I walked out the ballroom doors feeling disappointment. I didn't buy into the idea of a mate but I didn't want to reject the idea all together.

I lay in bed now as the thoughts of a mate swirls in my head. A mate... What exactly is a mate? To everyone, a mate means finally being happy. Happy in their arms, happy with their touch, happy with their love. It's pathetic to think girls think their mate is their happily ever after. I couldn't easily be swayed on the idea of a mate. But the idea itself was surely magnificent. Can somebody be happy without a mate? I've laughed and smiled, isn't that what happiness is? A mate... What exactly is it?

As the sun filters into my room, my eyes flutter open. I breathe out a sigh of relief, another day of freedom. It's been a month since the party. I'm still unmated, tired, and lazy. I'm still just me. Pulling myself out of bed, I see bags that seem full and a pre-made outfit on my dresser. I tug on the clothing. I hear a small knock on my door before it is opened slowly. My mother enters the room and smiles brightly at me.

"It's that time of the year!" her smile grows wider. I groan and fall back onto my bed. She is referencing the yearly meeting with the Alpha King. All of the alphas from around the world and their immediate family go to discuss everything werewolf related. I hated going but this year was going to be worse. I know my father well enough to know that he is going to 'help' me find my mate. I know I had no choice to stay but I still dragged my feet all day until I shut the car door. To the airport we go.

All three of us entered into our hotel. I breathe in the familiar smell of the older hotel. I knew we could afford better but like always the bigger packs get the better hotels. We didn't have the worst of it because our pack was far from small, I felt bad for all of the packs who were too small for a semi-decent hotel. As soon as my mother hands me my room key, I dash to the nearest elevator. I press the sixth button and the doors start to close but before they do, a hand shoots up. The doors reopen and a tall male steps in giving me a slight smile. He's definitely a werewolf, his scent was strong, stronger than an alpha at this hotel should be. I continue to stare at him as his hand pulls up, asking for a human greeting. I give a slight laugh as I put my hand in his, shaking it.

"Keaton." his voice was low and held power, a lot of power.

"Skyler" I wasn't intimidated by this male as I made eye contact with him. Alpha's don't like it when you look in their eyes like you're their equal. I give him a condescending side smirk. His eyes glance down at my neck, obviously checking for a mark. I keep my eyes on him never letting my smile fall. His eyes return to mine as he gives me a big smile that showed me his pearly whites. The elevator beeps and opens it's doors. The mechanical voice speaks with no emotion, "We have reached level 4."

"Pleasure riding with you, Skyler." his smooth blonde hair falls down and covers his eyes as he turns and walks out of the elevator. I stare at his back until the elevator doors close shut. I am intrigued. The mechanical voice spoke again, "We have reached level 6." I step out into the hall to find my own room.

I shove open the door and jump onto the king sized bed. Shutting my eyes, I quickly fall fast asleep.

I jolt awake to the pounding on my door. I walk over and throw open the door. I see my dad in his tuxedo that is a little too tight on his muscles. "What are you wearing?! We have to go in less than an hour!" I shut my door in his face and run to the bathroom screaming profanities as I struggle to get ready.

After a fast shower and half an hour of makeup and hair, I slide on my pastel blue ball gown that shows off every curve to my body. I was ready with fifteen minutes to spare. I make my way to the elevator and silently hope to see the mystery man once again. I wait for his hand to jolt up to stop the door but it doesn't happen. The doors close and I make my way down to the lobby. I sigh as I wait for the car to pull up. I have to ride alone because my parent have to go to an early meeting, alphas and lunas only. The car pulls up and hurry and jump in.

We hit every red light on the way there. I look at the time on my phone, it's 8:03. I groan, Dad is going to kill me for being late. It's embarrassing to be late, I know I am going to make a scene.

The car pulls up and the driver gives his apologies, I wave him off and walk towards the grand doors. I open them slowly and take my first step in. I get a sense of deja vu when all of the heads turn towards me. A blush rises to my cheeks and I start to put my head down. Show them who you are! my father's voice rings through my ears. I pull my shoulders back and I saunter down the aisle towards my parents. There must be over a few hundred people staring at me but I feel only one pair of eyes looking directly at me. I turn around knowing right where he is. I can't help the shudder of my body as I stare into his golden eyes. A hush falls around the entire crowd as they look back between us both. He stands up, his eyes never leaving mine. A mate... My mate.
