Flashback

He thought of ignoring her and to leave her alone in her grave sadness. She is the last person he'd ever care about. But he did something very un-Draco like.

He went and sat beside her.

Present

She looked up to find, none other than, Draco Malfoy sitting beside her. He was the last person she expected to be there. She wanted to scream at him and tell him to leave her alone, but she couldn't get anything out of her mouth because he didn't an utter single word. He was silent not bothering her.

Draco saw her bloodshot eyes through the corner of his eye. She didn't say anything but sat up straight and turned her gaze from him to the space.

Her hysterical cries turned into sobs and then finally silence shrouded them. Both of them didn't say anything until,

"You know..you know I saw you there," Hermione spoke without looking at him.

Draco's hardened look changed into a confused expression.

"I always knew you noticed me, Granger," he said cockily. "Where did you see me this time to be specific?"

He saw her lips twitching a little bit and relief flooded through him. He didn't know why but he felt very uneasy when he saw her crying. He was still debating with him when Hermione spoke.

"You know when that girl was being embarrassed by the boys...umm..the mudblood." She finally looked at him.

His platinum blonde locks were lying on his temples. His pale white skin was still the same as she had first seen in her first year. His facial expression was soft, unlike the pureblood attitude and there was no smirk. He was wearing a white button-down shirt, collar button open and sleeves rolled up his elbow with a pair of black trousers. She hated to admit it, but he did look scorchingly sexy.

"Oh that..uh..yeah," he replied hesitatingly.

He was taken aback. He never thought anyone would know about it. That his little work would remain a secret. But, of all people, Hermione Granger was the audience.

"I still can't believe it, you stood for a mudblood," she spoke again. Her mood seems to be lightened. "That's quite not the Malfoy I knew."

He chuckled at this but still didn't reply. After a few moments, he confessed something. Something nobody in the whole damn wizarding world would have ever imagined in their wildest dreams.

"I am sorry, Granger."

Hermione's eyes widened, and she for the second time couldn't trust her own senses.

Did she just hear Malfoy apologizing to her?

"What?" She did not ask this to repeat it again or embarrass him but she didn't know what else to say.

He rolled his eyes. "You heard me the first time."

She shook her head. "No. I mean...sorry for what?"

"Sorry for calling you mud..uh..that," he said shyly, scratching the nape of his neck. In this act, his sleeves got up a little bit and a part of dark mark came into vision.

Hermione felt the same uneasiness she felt every time she saw this in the pit of her stomach.

Seeing her expression changed and her steady gaze on his hand, he pulled his sleeve down rapidly.

"I shouldn't have ever called you that. I am sorry," he repeated.

She looked at him again. She couldn't find the right words to accept his apology. She was caught with a big surprise.

"It's okay. It doesn't hurt so much now, you see. But apology accepted," she finally managed to say and smiled at him.

She grinned at him. "You know what it kinda makes me feel better now."

"Good," That was all he said. He himself didn't know why he apologised to her, today. He always knew it was really bad to call her that, but he did it anyway. Maybe because she confronted her about the thing he did today or maybe because she was crying and he wanted her to feel better.

He frowned at the latter. He, of all people, will never think of comforting Granger.

But why was she crying in the first place?

"May I ask why were you crying, Granger?"

Hermione was a little taken aback at this question of his and she felt her tears finding their way back, as she remembered the dreadful encounter with Ron. She took a deep breath and pushed the tears back.

He owes her this much. He just apologized to her. Besides, in some days everyone would now. Why not tell him now, better than rumours anyway.

Judging her hesitation, Draco spoke again.

"It's fine if you don't wanna share. It's okay."

"Ron broke up with me," she said. Her voice barely held any emotion.

The sudden urge to hex Ron filled Draco's mind. How could he break up with Hermione?

She's THE Hermione Granger!

"I always knew Weasel was a dumbhead, but I didn't know that he was the dumbest creature walking on the planet," Draco said, forming a tight fist which caused his knuckles to turn white.

Hermione laughed at this, and soon she was laughing so hard that she clutched her stomach by one hand and tipped her head back.

Her laugh was infectious because Draco found himself grinning too, ear to ear. Her face flushed a beautiful shade of pink due to laughing so hard. He cannot help but admire her beauty.

Her laugh faded a while later and she looked up at Draco. He quickly averted his gaze.

"I..uh..should better be going. My friends might be looking for me." She paused at her own words.

Nobody was looking for her. Nobody came to find her. The thought made her sad again.

She smiled half-heartedly at him. Draco unaware of her thoughts called her again,

"Granger,"

"Yeah?" She turned back to face him.

"This doesn't change anything. We're still not friends," he said in a flat tone and turned away from her and walked away.
