CHAPTER 04
caramel macchiato"Hey," Elsa's voice sang, as she stepped into the bakery kitchen, slightly catching Hiccup off-guard as his mind was drowned in making a perfect knot. His fingers pulled the string tightly around the final delivery box for the night, closing it shut. Inside were a half dozen eclairs and a half dozen creme puffs. He had made sure to fit them in perfectly, not to disappoint whoever would receive them tomorrow.
Hiccup glanced up at the platinum blonde who was finally dressed and looking reasonably presentable. She held out a small plastic cup of water and a little blue pill bucket, two green and black pills inside. "Take these now before you forget." There was a hint of command in her voice.
He set the box down, piling it on top of the others that he had set on a metal rack with wheels on the bottom and took the cup and mini bucket. Elsa, now with her other hand free, took the mini laptop that was cradled in her right arm and plopped in a foldable chair that was placed beside the order counter, flipping the electronic device open. She yawned and glanced at the time, 7:04- already?
As Hiccup leaned against one of the multiple preparation counters, he set one of the pills in between his teeth, then lifted the water cup and gulped the medication down. Elsa selected a random song from one of the playlists on her laptop... "She Used to Be Mine", a recent Sara Bareilles hit, began playing. Both of them were unaware of the white Mini Cooper attempting to parallel park behind the motorbike and yellow beetle parked outside.
Elsa rolled her head back and huffed out a long puff of air and Hiccup chuckled in the back of his throat as he took the final pill. "Work wear you out today?" He inquired, wiping his lip with his wrist. She shook her head, "You have no idea how many people I had to turn down today. . . Just telling them that they couldn't afford it. Then they tell me 'oh well sorry I'm not the 1 percent of the population'."
"Yeah, I'm sure responding to dicks and sitting at the table with your laptop does a number on you."
"Can you actually leave me alone?"Hiccup shook his head, setting the cup down and straightening his spine, "No, I can't. Besides, you're the one who decided to come down here and talk to me." He held out his hand to her, flour stains still coating his palm.
"True." Elsa let her chin fall back down and noticed the gesture, then picked up the laptop from her lap and set it on the order counter. She reached out and took her flatmate's hand, not minding the flour stainsー like she cared about those now. She used his arm to support her getting to her feet, as she used her other hand to press on her knees clad in a pair of cute black leggings, with some white rose pattern.
She fell into his hold, wrapping her arms around his torso once her hand was free of his gentle grasp. He returned her motion and let his arms circle around her back and rest above her waist. He then rocked the blonde, who nestled her muzzle into his shoulder, back and forth to the 3/4 counts of the music. They typically did this, platonically.
Platonically.
"Platonically"
Just to relax, to lay back, as two 22 year-0lds who turned down their dreams either because of family or stresses. At the end of the day it was time to breathe. They were definitely close, but Elsa could never offer Hiccup anything. She could only offer him money, if anything, nothing else (as she believed). Would that disappoint him? She didn't know, nor did she want to risk finding out. That would ruin everything. . . She couldn't risk losing the relationship she already had with her best friend. Sure, her sister was always there, but. . She didn't understand. No one understood like Hiccup did, was what she thought- was what she believed on high levels.
