How did Ron and Hermione return from Chamber of Secrets after they got a Basilick fang in the final battle? The pipe they slide down is completely smooth.
Tom called the basilik up the pipe generally (for example the night Myrtle died) - though I don't know how got back up after freeing it the first time.
Fawkes gave them all a ride back up when they rescued Ginny.
