Conquer

I put the last of my bags in the car before getting in myself and starting my 4 hour journey out of town, on my way to college. I didn't even bother trying to say goodbye to my parents, for 2 reasons, #1 being that they wouldn't even hear me in their own little worlds and #2 is that they weren't even home.

I get being hurt, and angry and sad after losing a child but it's been 4 damn years and they haven't been the same since. Meaning dads a drunk and moms always doing stuff. Always busy, never home. She has to take a sleeping pill every night to fall asleep.

Caden (my older brother) died in a car accident by a drunk driver. He was the perfect son. He had good grades, he was good looking, he was kind, and athletic and so much more.
He was the best brother I could have ever asked for. Sure he tried to always get me to join karate or kickboxing, but he was never rude or mean about it. He just wanted to make sure I could protect myself if I ever had to. I never joined though, I was too afraid. I don't know why, he never would have let anything happen to me.

After he died , I joined his dojo. To make him proud... to make his memory proud. I fight for him, to remember him, the good times I had watching him fight. I fight to be like him, he was strong, and happy, and proud to just be himself.

Now I follow what he always told me. To always conquer.

Conquer... every night, for as long as I can remember Caden would always tell me "always conquer" followed by a 'baby sis' or 'little sister" or something along the lines of that. He probably told me that since the day I was born. He was 8 years older than me and had been doing karate since he was 5. Anyway, I didn't know what it meant until I was 10 and asked him one night.

~Flashback~

"Goodnight Briar, always conquer baby sis." Caden said before turning the lights off and going to leave.

"Wait" 10 year old Briar said from her bed, sitting up.
"What does conquer mean?"

Caden turned the lights back on and walked over to sit beside me on my bed.
"Conquer means to overcome and take control. It's what I always tell myself before a fight."

"But I don't fight." I told my brother confused as to why he always tells me this.

"You don't have to be a fighter to conquer, goofball. People who don't fight overcome and take control of things all of the time, I just happen to say it before I fight. Helps me calm down. And it's something I want you to remember. In case you ever need to overcome or take control of something."

I nodded my head letting him know I understand, "conquer; overcome, take control."

"Good." Caden said as he got up to leave "goodnight, always conquer Briar." Turning around he walked out and closed the door."

~flashback over~

The honking of a car brought me back into the land of the living. I looked up to see a green light that I have probably been sitting at for a while. I honk back at the dude who honked at me and stick the finger out my window as I start driving.

I have no idea what I have gotten myself into...
