Chapter 2: Together Against the World

“Do you have a lawyer, Nova?”

“No.”

“Would you like to defend yourself here?”

“Yes.” The police officer’s breath was hot on my face. They had arrested me and brought me into the police station. I didn’t do anything, but no one would believe me.

“I didn’t do anything. You have no proof I did. I don’t even have the bracelet. Wouldn’t I have the bracelet if I apparently ‘stole’ it?”

“But you were caught running away from the scene.”

“For one, I wasn’t running and for two, you still have not one piece of proof.”

“We don’t need proof to be correct.”

“But you aren’t correct.” This argument was getting annoying and I was ready to go home. I need my energy for the plane ride to New Mexico. NEW MEXICO! Crap! I forgot. Xavier’s mom was supposed to pick me up at eight.

I looked at my watch. Eight-thirty. Yep. Just my luck.

“Look, I need to go home. I didn’t do anything, but I can tell you who did.”

He raised his eyebrows in anticipation. “Well, don’t just sit there. Tell me.”

“You could say please.”

“Tell me, now!”

“I’m not hearing a please.”

“Please?”

“That’s better. It was some girl in a bush.”

“A bush?”

“Yes. I don’t know who it was, but she seemed like she was hiding from something.”

“I’m here!” My adopted mother stormed into the room. Her eyes threw daggers as she sat down across from me. “What happened? What did you do now, you little scumbag? You should have just came home with me! Next time, you will do as I say, is that understood?”

“Next time? There won’t be a next time and I didn’t do anything, Cecilia! Stop treating me like a little, lying girl! I am tired of you and your ridiculous rules! When I get out of here, I am going to New Mexico with Xavier and you can’t stop me!” Now that I finally said that, I realized that it was true. I hated this lady. She fed me, gave me a roof over my head, let me get an education, but it feels like she just needed a personal maid. She makes me do everything.

“If you go, be sure not to come back. Try to get a new life without someone there to care for you!” Her words felt like a slap to the face.

“Whatever.”

“Look, I will give you one more chance. I will bail you out and then we part ways. Got it?”

I didn’t know what to do. If I accepted her offer, where would I go? If didn’t, I would be stuck in here. I like the first option better. “Never seeing you again should be a condition.”

I stepped into the fresh air and spread my arms wide. Today was my first day of freedom since I was nine. Wow! This is insane. What am I going to do now?

A look of surprise floated across my face as I saw a black car with dark windows parked in front of the building. The window rolled down and Xavier’s head poked out. “Hey. So, you get invited to New Mexico and arrested all in one day. I’m very proud of you.”

“I didn’t order a pair of handcuffs with a side of insults.”

“I’m sorry. What happened anyways? I got a call from your “mother” and she said you got arrested. I got here as fast as I could. You packed?”

“Of course not! The cops got me before I even made it to my house.” I stared at my shoes and closed my eyes. “Stupid girl in the bush.”

Xavier raised his eyebrows. “Oh! Let me guess. It was Neveah, wasn’t it? She is like the teenage villain of this entire town. The only teenage criminal in this town, actually.”

“Who is Neveah? “

“Your bush-girl.”

“Where have I heard that name before?”

“It is Sophie’s favorite name. That is most likely where you have heard it. ”

“Oh! That makes sense.”

“Hmm? But there is also this girl that goes to our school and she isn’t very good. She steals, drinks, and the cops almost catch her. They are too stupid to catch one girl. They just never really see her. They just see stuff missing and they go after her, but they always give up. Anyways, let’s stop talking about her.”

“Can we leave now? If I’m still invited…”

“Well, duh! We will have to swing by your house and get your stuff and-“

“If so, let’s hurry.”

“Why? What’s wrong?”

“I kind of told my “mom” off and that I was moving out. I’m sure she won’t be very happy with me the next time she sees me alone.” Turning my fingers into quotation marks every time I said “mom” was getting very annoying. I think I will stop.

“Gammit! Then let’s go, Criminal!”

“Ha-ha-ha! You know me the dangerous criminal. The one that will ninja out on you if you turn your back for too long,” I laughed like I was on drugs. My sarcasm sucked like crap, but who really cares. Two whole months with Xavier was going to be amazing. Not the cheesy kind of amazing most hippies talk about, but the actual kind of amazing that is in most movies. “Wait! I have to pee!”

“Not now! Wait until we get to your house!” As I opened my car door, the strangest things happened. My “mom” stepped out of the building, immediatelybeginning to yell random things at us, and Alex and Sophie slammed into the open car door with Alex’s motorcycle, sending me and the door flying.

I just laid sprawled across the ground with the door on top of me, listening to all the sounds I heard. This wasn’t very many, considering I got hit with a motorcycle and a car door.

My side and my arm were hurting very badly, but I ignored it. Everything hurt actually. The last thing I saw was Xavier’s worriedexpression before I slipped into unconsciousness.
