13 | Taking The Long Way Home
I soon enough grew to love having Mikey, Ashton and Calum around. They are really sweet and always find ways to cheer me up when I'm feeling down.
Luke and I talk a lot more now and he normally stays overnight at the hospital with me. Part of me still seems to get the feeling that he still feels responsible for the accident despite the multiple times I told him that it wasn't.
And as for Katie, she's an angel. Her and her mom come down to visit me sometimes and I do the same for her. We read stories together and watch Disney movies, wear neon tutus over our hospital gowns and do each others hair.
When she first met Luke, she seemed a little on edge, but soon enough warmed to him and they get on really well.
I've discovered that Katie has two personalities. One side of her is a girly, princess loving person. Whereas the other side likes stuff to do with the army and comic books.
My thoughts are silenced as a nurse walks in with a clipboard containing sheets of paper about my medical progress and other information about my well-being.
She clears her throats loud enough for us to hear, making Luke's head snap up to face her as well as my own doing the same thing.
"Well, I'm glad to say that we've looked over your scans and there doesn't seem to be any signs of brain damage or anything harmful. We are going to discharge you at mid-day, so please pack up you're stuff to be ready to leave." The nurse says politely before walking out.
I sigh and begin to pack all my stuff into suitcases. Luke helps as he hums a tune that I've never heard of.
I get changed out of the gown and manage to get into some jeans and one of Luke's old hoodies.
Luke calls Mikey and soon leaves to put my suitcases in his car. Whilst I wait till 12 o'clock, I use my time to visit Katie.
I knock on her door and slowly enter, seeing her face light up as I do so.
'"I'll get my dollies!" She screams happily, but I frown and rest my hand on her shoulder.
"Hey Katie. I actually can't play dollies today as I'm being discharged from the hospital in a bit." I say and her smile slowly fades.
"Oh." Is all she manages to say.
"But hey, I'll come and visit you all the time and we can play dollies everyday if you want. Your mom has my number and even if you just want to talk, I'm only on the other side of the phone."
"You promise you'll come and visit me?" She whimpers gently and my heart shatters to see her so upset.
I hold out my pinky finger and delicately link mine with hers.
"I pinky promise." I say in a whisper tone before pulling her in and hugging her.
"I'm going to miss you, Sophie."
"I'm going to miss you too."
I quickly hug her again and smile at her and her mom before leaving the room.
As I start to walk down the hallway, I'm stopped by a hand that grabs onto my wrist gently.
I turn to face whoever grabbed my hand to see Katie's mom, Mrs Knight.
"Before you leave," she started.
"I just wanted you to know that Katie's cancer is extremely severe. We don't know how long she's got left and you seem to make her happy. I want her last few weeks to be happy. So please, for her sake, keep that promise." She whimpers as her eyes tear up.
"Mrs Knight, I hope you understand that I never had the intention of breaking that promise...."
"I know- I know, it's just that I don't want her to spend her last few weeks miserable because you didn't show up to see her. Seeing my little girl so happy again made me feel overwhelmed. She adores you, she really does."
"That's okay, your daughter is a wonderful girl and I'm so sorry that you and your family have to go through this. She doesn't deserve this and neither do you. I hope everything does work out and that they do find a cure quick enough to save her, I really do." I whisper before pulling Joanne into a tight embrace.
I hear Luke call my name and I say goodbye to Katie's mom before running over to Luke and Mikey.
"So, where are we going Luke?" Mikey asks.
"Just take the long way home." Luke adds as we get into the car with smiles on our faces.
"The long way home it is!" Mikey yells as he turns up the volume of his Nirvana CD, letting the music blast my eardrums.
I sigh happily, feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Finally everything can get back on track and my life can be normal again.
But little did I know that my life would be far from normal from now on...

Hello to all my lovely readers,
Katie must be so upset, awww my heart 😞
This chapter was a little shorter compared to usual as I decided to do a quick filler chapter. Yes, I know that it was pretty boring but the information was necessary and I feel like this is gonna be a good storyline to build on from now.
In the next chapter, there will be a lot of new characters coming in and even more exciting drama to make Luke and Sophie's relationship difficult.
Love you all so much!!! Nearly at 500 reads, OML 🤘🏼😂💋
