I get out from under the desk quickly, banging my head against it in the process. I wince.

You okay?

Yeah, I'm fine. But why did Alex and his friends come?

He doesn't like people opposing him. And unfortunately, the fiery dodgeball I threw may have contributed to his anger. It also didn't help that Kacy yelled at him when school got out today.

Yeah. We're going to have to change the entrance mechanism, unfortunately.

I walked out of the room, looking at everybody. They all looked in pain, in one way or another. I felt a sinking feeling. Guilt.

I could have helped.

Don't try to be heroic. Alex would have just grabbed you and beat you up. Besides, it's not like you could have fought back, you don't have magics, do you?

I hesitated for a second. Should I tell them? No, I reasoned. It would only endanger them if they knew. But why not? I thought. They have magics too.

I lied to them. Why did I lie to them?

I thought so. It's fine Jess, really.

I pulled out my phone, checking the time. 5:28.

Guys, if your mom says 'stay as long as you like' what time do you think she wants you to be home by?

What time do you have dinner?

I gulped.

Well, probably then. Do you have your homework done?

Most of it.

Well you better get your butt outta here and home then, because it's 5:30.

My home is a 45 minute walk. And what if Alex is still out there?

I live on 117. I can walk with you to make sure Alex doesn't hurt you.

We walked out of our lair. I looked around cautiously before sprinting out of the library. I could hear Amber's footsteps behind me.
