Kellin's POV
Tuesday
The air was fearful, and the faces of my classmates were drawn into frowns. Guys had their arms around their girlfriends; as they buried into their sides for comfort. However, I was wrapping my arm around no one, and no one was wrapping their arm around me either.
I was simply sitting with my friends, Justin and Jack, as we curiously watched the scene unfold.
Our high school was on lock down, because there was a 'vicious' gang of bikers in the area. In my opinion it was a stupid reason to create such panic; I mean, all they had done was drive past the school and park at the Walmart across the road! How very viscous of them.
That was what my opinion had been, until I heard the first gunshot.
So they parked outside the Walmart, but they had done so to rob the Walmart. Great. Worst idea ever; no one ever robs Walmart and gets away with it.
Everyone was curiously going up to the windows, getting up from the floor, and peeping through the curtains. Jack, Justin and I were the closest. The teacher was yelling at us to sit back down again, saying that what we were doing was 'against the school lock down procedure,' but nobody cared. In a few minutes he came to stand by the window too.
Sirens sounded, and suddenly the bikers were pouring out of the Walmart. I saw a flash of neon green, and arched my eyebrow. If they didn't want to be caught robbing a store, having someone with neon green hair on your team wouldn't help your chances of not being recognized.
They got onto their bikes and started to leave. There was one car with them, a roofless BMW, but the rest rode on motorbikes.
The mop of green hair disappeared into the passenger side of the BMW.
Was it just me who had noticed? No one seemed to be saying anything about the green hair, and I knew Justin would made a snide remark if he had seen it.
Shaking my head, I let go of my curious thoughts over the green haired person.
The bikers were gone just as quickly as they came. A few seconds after they left my sight line, police cars came into view. There was two dozen of them at least. Half continued to chase the bikers, while the other half pulled up at the Walmart to assess the damage.
I was sure they would close in on the bikers, cordoning off the roads and leaving them with no where to go. They would be trapped by the walls of policemen, like flies stuck in webs; because that was what always happened when you messed with Walmart. Especially in such a big, noticeable group.
It made me wonder what the hell they had been thinking. They must have been desperate. I guess when your desperate, you don't think a whole lot about the outcome of your actions.
The school stayed on lock down for the rest of the day, and then finally when the buses pulled up, we were allowed to leave. The buses were taking different routes to avoid the danger and chaos. Because of that, it took me a lot longer to get home.
As soon as I opened the door to my house, my parents were all over me.
Surprisingly enough it was my father who was smothering me the most; when in any typical household it would be the mother. It was just a circumstance I guess. When I was born, my mother nearly died, and I would have too if they didn't cut me out.
I guess the shock of being left all alone made him realize how important it is to keep your loved one close, safe, and protected.
"Are you alright?" My dad asked, his features laced with worry.
"Well I'm alive." I chuckled as I shrugged my parent's arms off me. "It was actually a pretty good day. We didn't have to take the test we were meant to be taking."
They shook their heads at me, but they were smiling. I moved past them and into the house, going upstairs to ditch my bag in my room, before coming back downstairs to get some food. "How did you hear what was going on?" I asked as I sifted through the cupboards looking for a snack.
"The school left everyone's parents a text, and then we put the TV on." My mother answered.
My dad had resumed his place at the table, trying to write, but he seemed to be finding it hard as his face was pressed against his notepad. All he could do was nod in confirmation.
"Did you watch?" He said a few seconds later.
"Yeah." I replied. "It was kind of stupid for them all to hit up a Walmart. The police will probably catch them soon." I pondered whether I should mention the green haired person or not. I decided against it.
"And your friends are okay too?"
"Mom." I smiled reassuringly. "Everyone's fine. No one at school got hurt."
She sighed. "Good."
My father moved over to my mother and pecked her on the cheek, smiling cutely at her as if they were teenagers. I pretended to gag but they didn't notice. I was just being playful anyway; I found their relationship refreshing compared to all the broken families these days. I knew we were lucky.
My father had met my mother when they were in their last year of high school. He said they had been friends for a month or two, before he had finally worked up the nerve to kiss her. They had been together ever since.
It was amazing to think that they watched each other grow up, watched each other go through their ups and downs with money and in their careers; watched each other change, whether that be in looks or personality. They advanced in their lives together.
And then I came along.
My mother kissed him again, and he lifted her out of the chair as she yelled at him to put her down. I watched them, chuckling. I wanted to have something like that someday.
I wanted to have something like that now. And seeing them being all cutesy at their age was starting to bum me out. I mean, I was a teenager and I didn't even have that love.
"Sure your alright?" My father asked as he put my mom down.
Then I spoke the famous words. "I'm fine."
