But she didn't catch them at their apartment. When she saw Emily it was a few hours later. Alison tried so hard to stay awake in those hours but at some point she must have failed since she didn't realize Emily was home after she heard Mackenzie crying in her bedroom.
Besides being still in her sleepy daze she got off the couch, to make her way over to the room. You would think Alison would jump up from the couch and run over to them after finally seeing them, but instead you found her walking very cautiously, taking her time with every step she took. The closer she got, the more she hesitated if she even wanted to see Emily.
She got nothing more than a stupid excuse, Alison felt even ashamed of herself. But she had to face her problems so there she was, her hand on the door handle. She could already catch a glimpse of what was going on in the room. Her eyes traveled trough the slight opening between the door and wall, finding Emily hovering above her daughter. Before she turned directly to the door.
In fear of being caught Alison instinctively backed away from the door, even more when she found Emily walking to the door.
She thought it was best to pretend she was still asleep so she rushed over to the couch to get in her previous position. Alison's eyes being closed she tried to make out every little thing with her ears.
A frustrated sigh was all she heard and some footsteps going into their own room. Making Alison frown, has she even seen me sleeping on the couch? Once again Alison got up from the couch only this time to make her way to the bedroom she shared with Emily, their door was completely shut.
After taking a deep breath Alison got in, as quiet as possible. Only to find Emily not being there, instead she heard the sound of water running coming from the bathroom. She didn't want to disturb Emily so she waited on the bed for her to come out.
Striking the duvet she thinks about how the events on this bed yesterday were so different from this moment. But she knows she's the only one to blame. Being to deep in her thought she didn't realize that Emily had walked in.
After stopping abruptly in her footsteps, probably because she was surprised to find Alison sitting on the bed, she just went on with her own business. Completely ignoring Alison's presence.
Up to the moment she couldn't do it anymore, it hadn't had anything to do with Alison's directly stare. She got those stares all day in the past. It was that Emily needed Alison to get her off the bed, so she could change the sheets. Changing the sheets was the last thing she wanted to do after such a long night. But it was kind of a must, because last night was also a long night with some events that makes you want to change your sheets.
"Alison," she croaked out, her voice trembling along with her hands that were holding the fresh sheets. Lucky enough Alison nodded understanding the message, she got up from the bed and was already taking of the sheets. Leaving a surprised Emily. Never in her life she had witnessed someone changing the sheets she slept in.
It made Emily realize that she had the right to be angry with Alison. Just as Alison had said, they were equals now. And equals can get mad at each other. Only Emily wasn't really experienced in this whole equal thing, she had only seen other people fight. But never once she thought about raising her own voice.
"How's Mackenzie." Alison sounded insecure, her voice was dry and her heart was pounding against her chest. It all increased when Emily's eyes stared directly in hers, for the first time this night.
"The doctor said she'll be fine." Emily said already diverting her eyes to anywhere else except Alison's. So Emily did went to the hospital, Alison thinks by herself.
Emily sat with her back towards Alison when they were done, her bad posture shows Alison how tired she is so she decides it's time to let her sleep. She should let Emily think about all the things she wants to say and in the morning Alison will be ready for it.
So she quickly grabs the pillow from the bed and walks over to the closet to grab a blanket out of it. She feels Emily's eyes on her, watching her every move. "Where are you going?"
"I'll sleep on the couch, I don't want to disturb you." Alison says giving Emily a quick smile. before already walking of their room. Before Emily gets the change to respond she's already out of the room.
_____I'll sleep on the couch, Alison would definitely chose her words differently because she couldn't fall asleep at all. Worries were taking over her mind, something that had never happened before. Also she has never felt so bad about herself.
Normally when Alison did something wrong it was immediately pointed out and she would get in her defense mode in a matter of a second. But now that nobody was lashing out to her she was left with her own thoughts, who were doing the argument on their own. Over and over the disappointed and mad Alison kept winning over the selfish and intimidating Alison, something that frustrated Alison even more.
Couldn't they just talk it out and forget about it. Couldn't Emily just yell at her for a good two minutes who are followed with Alison apologizing so they can all leave it behind. So that Alison could sleep tonight with Emily in her arms, something she looked forward too all those months being apart.
Lucky wasn't on her s- or was it?? She heard a door cracking behind her, making her sit upright immediately. Jerking her head around she found Emily in the doorway looking pissed at her.
Had god heard her prayers? It seemed that Emily was going to lash out on her any second, but the looks Alison got from her made question if she really wanted Emily to lash out on her for a good two minutes.
"So two days ago you told me we were equals,"
"We are equals." Alison corrects but once she sees Emily's glare she notices her mistake.
"But can you explain to me then why your 'supposed to be equal' ass wasn't at the hospital. Because in the hospital it definitely opened my eyes that we are in so many ways not equal. We could have been, but you chose for whatever the reason may be to not come. Not even for the sake of my daughter who was falling ill."
"Emily I'm so sorry, you must believe me. They wouldn't let me leave. They kept talking and asking me all these things, I tried to get away."
"You tried to get away. No one but your selfish mind was holding you back, you have no right to say that."
And for the first time in her life Alison was out of words, the only thing she could do was close her eyes and let all Emily's words sink in. Now was not the right time to be proud of Emily, speaking up for herself like that, but still a sense of pride washed over her. But realizing what her next words where going to be, her own proud were showing some cracks.
"You're right, and I am sorry. I should have told them that there was a family problem and leave that place immediately but I didn't. But at that party I didn't realize what I had and what I could lose, maybe we both have to get used to one another. Your life changed drastically of course, but I need to get used to some things too. Never in my life have I been in a relationship let along put anyone's feelings above mine. Still I'm so sorry, Em."
Emily really didn't want to give in so soon, maybe it was the tiredness or she just couldn't be mad at Alison at all, but she found herself giving Alison a small nod. Alison thought her mind was imagining the nod, the movement was so minimal. But when Emily walked back in the room leaving the door for Alison open to follow her, she knew she wasn't imaging it. So with big strides she walked to the bedroom getting under the covers next to Emily, finally getting her nighttime.
