X—Jason
Apate’s words sent chills running down Jason’s spine.
Why had the goddess been talking directly to him?
Piper tugged at his elbow with a quiet clearing of her throat.
“Come on, Jason,” she soothed, although Jason noticed the slight wavering of her voice. “She’s just trying to mess with you.”
Jason locked eyes with Apate—electric blue on ice blue—and a flicker of amusement flashed through the goddess’ eyes.
“She’s right,” Apate agreed with a complying shrug of her shoulders. “I’m the goddess of deceit. It’s what I do best—mess with people.”
Leo clapped Jason’s shoulder tentatively.
“Seriously, dude,” he urged, and Jason noticed Leo hopping slightly from one foot to the next. “Let’s go.”
Jason finally turned away from the gods, and got ready to fly off again.
Apate’s voice filtered through the air once more.

At the outstretched palm of his sister, he flicked the object over.
It shimmered with a golden shine as it flew through the air to land in Apate’s hand.
The goddess caught it skillfully and held the circular item between her thumb and index finger.
It was the coin that Leucothea had given Jason.
Immediately, purely driven by his instinct, Jason lunged forward, swinging his sword in the goddess’ general direction.
He pressed the tip threateningly under Apate’s chin.
“One little slip and your head’s coming right off,” he growled.
Apate stared right up at him, her expression more bemused than intimidated.
“Oh, boo hoo!” she mocked, throwing her arm across her eyes as if she was pretending to cower in fear. “Save the tough guy act for the Gaea. Here--”
