After another busy shift, I headed to Molly's Tavern to have dinner with my dad and stepmom. We laughed and had a good time. I drank no alcohol, because I had to drive. Yet, the next moment, my life flashed before my eyes. I was driving home when out of no where, a truck crashed into my car. I lost consciousness soon after. I woke up with burning pain in my leg and shoulder... I saw flames surrounding my car and heard people trying to get me out. I heard sirens and the jaws of life. As I was pulled out of my car, I heard someone ask, "Can you hear me?" I nodded. I heard another man ask, "Severide! You got her?" "Yes, Hermann! I got her!" Next thing I know, I woke up in the same hospital I work in.
A minute later, I woke up again to find the guy who rescued me. We greeted and introduced each other. I then looked out the window to my room and saw a few other firefighters who were there. "Caroline," Severide said..grinning,"this is Chris Hermann, Gabriela Dawson, Matt Casey, and our chief, Wallace Boden." I looked at them, smiled, and said, "It's an honor to meet y'all! Thank you so much for saving my life!," then I joked and said, "I never knew I would end up here as a patient." We all laughed and I explained that I have worked here for three weeks as an emergency physician. They were impressed. After we talked, they had to go back to work. Then, Dr. Halstead came in.
"Hey Caroline. How are you feeling?"
"Ok, I guess. How bad are the burns?"
"You have second degree burns from your leg to your shoulder on the left side of your body and you had to have emergency skin grafts."
"Ok. How long til I get back to work?"
"Not for another two weeks. You have to have more skin grafts and treatments to repair and heal the skin."
I sighed and said, "I see. But, I'm glad I'm not too bad off."
"Same here."
"Thanks for updating me, doc."
"You're welcome."
Then, his pager went off and he left.
