"What was that Paige?" my mom asked as I blankly stared at the scene in front of me.
"Uh.. I was just going to say it smells good," I nervously made my way over to sit between my dad and my mom. Brad was sat on the opposite end of the table between his parents. I made room for Sam to sit between my mom and I. My mom served us our food I stared down at my plate the whole time. I slowly turned my glance to Sam, who didn't look very good to say the least.
See my mom had known that something had happened to Sam a year ago, but she didn't know in detail and to be honest nobody knew the real details of the incident. Basically everyone was told Sam had an issue on the way home from Connors party and that was the end of it. Sam begged me not to mention any of it to anyone because he didn't want Brad to do anything to him at school. So I did what Sam told me, and I didn't tell anyone. There is probably only 3 people that know the truth of what happened and we are all sitting at this table.
After a long and rather awkward silence my dad spoke up, "so Paige and Sam," I looked up, "this is Derek's wife Anne," he gestured toward the dark haired woman sitting next to Derek, "and this is their son Bradley."
"You can call me Brad," he responded with a half smile to my dad. Wow at that moment he didn't seem like so much of a jerk. I quickly got over my thought when he settled back into his seat and let his face slowly fall out of the smile it previously held.
I gave a small smile to Anne before turning my head to Brad and slowly letting my smile drop, not enough for anyone else to notice. Everyone began eating away at the food on their plates. Tension hung thick in the air between Brad, Sam, and I. I wonder what Brad thought of all this, he shows up to his dad's business partner's house to find someone he almost killed a year ago along with that person's best friend who just happens to know the whole story.
My parents, Derek and Anne starting talking about the business and I just didn't bother to listen. I looked around the table looking at Sam. His green eyes focused on his fork like it was the most interesting thing. I knew he probably felt super awkward sitting here and acting calm in front of Brad and my parents. If he only knew Brad would be here for dinner he probably wouldn't have accepted my mother's offer to stay. I reached down to gently pat his leg, he flinched a bit at my touch but then looked at me and I gave him a small smile. I then switched my gaze to Brad who sat looking down at his plate. His brown curls were resting on his forehead and he looked as if he was deep in thought.
We all finished our meal, to our luck my parents or Brad's parents didn't say anything to us. I excused myself from the table nodding a goodbye to Anne and Derek before walking Sam to the door.
"Well that was awkward," I said while Sam reached down to grab his shoes. He didn't answer me as he slipped on his shoes and stood up. He didn't even look at me as he turned on his heel, opened the door, and walked out shutting it behind him. What is his problem?
I know it obviously wasn't comfortable in anyway for him sitting at the table, but it's not like it's my fault I had no idea Brad and his family were going to be here. I shuffled up the stairs and into my room. I threw on my floral onesie, brushed my teeth before hopping into bed and falling asleep.
.......................
I rolled out of bed and sleepily walked to the bathroom. It was already Tuesday. The long weekend went by too fast. I wasted it doing what I normally do, sleeping, eating, watching netflix and scrolling through my phone. Sam didn't bother to text or call since Friday, but I wasn't sure if it was because of his family plans or because of what happened at my house on Friday. It probably was because of Friday but I don't understand why he was so mad at me. I would see him in school today so hopefully I can get him to talk to me.
My mother had also informed me that next Saturday we would be going out to some fancy celebration dinner for the opening of the company with none other but the Simpsons. Joy!
I brushed my hair and my teeth and put on my everyday make up consisting of concealer, mascara, a little eyeliner, and some lip balm. Rummaging through my drawers, I pulled out a pair of jeans and an oversized sweater.
I finished the rest of my morning routine before leaving my house and started toward the school.
.........................
When I got to school I went to my locker to drop off my jacket and grab my books for first period. I felt someone show up beside me, I'm pretty sure it's Sam.
I started closing my locker, "Sam, I'm sorry I di-" once my locker was completely closed I could see the person wasn't Sam but Brad leaning against the locker next to mine, his dark brown eyes staring into my blue ones.
"So, I didn't know Mike was your dad," Brad spoke in his low raspy voice.
"And I didn't know Derek was yours, but I don't care so just don't talk to me thanks," I turned so I wasn't looking at him and started walking away.
"You know you think you know everything, but you don't," Brad called after me. I didn't look back I just kept walking further away from him.
