we arrived with only 2 hours to spare for the show. the venue was a tiny bar with hardly any space. there were a few tables and a small booth, hardly enough room for the merch.
the boys didn't seem to be drawing in a big crowd for this show, anyways.
"are you ready?" matty pointed to the boys. did they know about me?
Ross, Adam, and George sat on concrete steps that lead to a door, which i assumed was backstage.
i shyly walked towards them with Matty beside me. Adam and George were griping over something, Ross was on his phone.
"Boys!" Matty announced."oh, hello," Ross said looking up at me. The others glared at one another.
"this is her?" george asked.
"she looks a bit young, don't you say?" adam added in."she's fine, leave her alone," matty said.
"oh, let me guess? 18!" ross exclaimed.
"for cryin' out loud, will you just hush!" matty shouted.beside me, a loud door opened. a head peered out.
"is there an issue out here?" the man raised his eyebrows. "Um, fans aren't allowed back here, you'll have to go back to the front. Sorry." He said looking at me. i didn't know what to think at this interaction. what the hell am i getting myself into?"Everything is just dandy, jamie," george said.
"and she's not a fan, J, this is my girl, willow," matty sighed. the boys looked around at each other.Jamie raised his eyebrows again, "Can't have you gettin' arrested, matty. be careful." he slammed the door back behind him.
matty walked away, i followed.
"that didn't go as planned, i'm sorry about that," he mumbled."it's okay," i looked up at him. i mean, my mom would still react worse than everyone combined.
"i'll make up for it princess, i promise," he ran his finger from my chin up to my lips, then kissed me. i wrapped my arms around him and rested my head on him.
i felt comfort.

the doors opened at 7, so i went to booth a few minutes early. to my surprise, fans were already in line at the booth. i wasn't sure how to act, did they know about me and matty?
i know i wasn't spreading information anywhere, but you never know.
"hi," i smiled to the fans. one by one, they gave me their requests and handed me cash.
"who are you?" a fan asked confusingly. another girl beside her laughed, drawing attention to me in the line.
"i'm just the merch girl, ha," i tried to play off being normal. aren't merch girls usually just random people?
"merch girl? i've been to all of their shows here and i've never seen you. jamie always does merch," a girl said to me. i tried distracting myself by grabbing more shirts and cash.
"um, i don't know. i was asked to be the merch girl for the new york shows," i explained, while stuttering.
i wasn't sure how to react. i didn't think it would matter at all to anyone.
"and how were you picked? did they just randomly find some girl in the whole state of new york?" another fan asked. she seemed more interested in having my position than knowing why i was there.
if only she knew what i really am to him.
"look, i'm not here for questions, im here for my job. if you aren't here to get merch, then i suggest you leave because i'm not answering any questions." i snapped. it's uncalled for. our personal lives are not anyone else's business.
i didn't think my presence would be bothersome.

the show started around 8. the boys drew a decently sized crowd, a couple hundred, i would say.
i stood in the back at the merch table the whole time. i had perfect viewing, though. the boys were close to wrapping up the show.
"alright now, this last song isn't the best. it's still being worked on. this was one of the first song we made as a band," matty explained. "this ones called girls."
matty sang the lyrics while glaring at me.
"she can't be what you need if she's 17, they're just girls," matty sang, he started to laugh on stage. i began laughing where i was, too.oh, healy. i really am wrapped around your mind, huh?
the boys kept playing music, but matty was missing the lyrics.
"oh god, she's wonderful," he whispered into the microphone while giggling more.
he's wholesome. but he better not slip up.
"i'm sorry," matty laughed more, then began to finish up the song.
i've always admired him for his passion in music. to see him do what he loves was a great memory. no matter what happens with us.
+after the show, i continued to sell merch. fans still piled up around the table in a mob. i keep going back and forth from merch to fans.
in the mob, i heard fans talking about what happened during girls. i didn't add anything into it.
they can't think that lyric was planned, right? it was just a silly lyric.
i went to the back sifting through boxes to find sizes when i was dragged to the side, almost bringing me to the ground.
"woah-ah," i muttered, and slightly stumbled. my face turned to meet matty's.his hand was gently placed on the side of my neck. the other hand on my side.
the fans at the merch table started to shout for
service. i didn't pay any attention to them. he pulled me closer to him and kissed my lips."you're beautiful, willow," he said to me. he dragged me by my hand. in the distance, jamie begins to approach us.
"Jamie, we're done for the night," matty said.oh, we are now, daddy?
the nights only beginning.
