Chapter one: strangers and competitions

It was my first year in high school. I was very nervous because I’m placed in a new environment. I don’t know anyone here. It’s just a small school but there were a lot of people and it scared me. I’m not a very sociable person. I was shy around others and I don’t talk much. I express my feelings and thoughts through writing.

I got my schedule and headed to my classroom. I got scared and felt out of place because most of my classmates studied here since they were in kindergarten, so most of them know each other. When the teacher arranged our seats, the girl in front me said hi and introduced herself as Monica. Our friendship began from there. I immediately fitted in with them. I slowly gained friends. I became a volleyball and basketball player.

As the months passed by I also met other people from other sections and year levels. Students have a deep bond in this school. They treat each other more than just classmates or friends. People here treated each other as family.

One day, I was quietly sitting on bench near the basketball, eating my lunch when I noticed someone. He was wearing a jacket. His jacket intrigued me because first, it was 12 noon so why the hell would he wear a jacket in broad daylight? It was hot outside for heaven’s sake. Second, he had looks. He was tall, dark and handsome. He was also a basketball player. And third, the words on his jacket caught my attention “your pretty face is going to hell.” It was written using a white marker. I silently watched him as he played. The bell rang and just like that he was gone from my line of sight.

I am good at remembering faces. But I can rarely recall names. I was hanging out with my friends when I saw him again. This time, the phrase on his jacket changed. “Your pretty face is going to heaven – Lea 07” it seems that he has a girlfriend. Too bad. I thought. And since then I didn’t pay attention to him anymore.

It was science week. I was chosen to be the class representative for the quiz bee. I passed the elimination round and the names were posted on the hall.

Note: I used K idol names for this. I don’t want to mention my friends.

Congratulations! You qualified for the Finals in the Science Quiz Bee!

1.       Victoria Song

2.       Krystal Jung

3.       Kris Wu

4.       Park Chanyeol

5.       Zhang Yixing

6.       (your name)

7.       Kim Heechul

8.       Amber Liu

9.       Kim Kibum

10.   Lee Donghae

“Look! You qualified for the finals!” Monica exclaimed as she saw your name. “Really?” I said. It was first time entering a quiz bee competition. I slowly read the names until the number 3 name caught my attention. What a weird name. That’s the first time I heard such a name. (Note: this was my actual thought because his first name was French and he had a really long name. LOL) we went back to our classroom because I had to prepare for the quiz bee.

I ended up on the 4th place. It was a great experience and my teacher congratulated me because I did a good job.

Summer passed and I was in second year. I was moved to the 1st section / star section with my best friend, Monica because we ranked 1st and 2nd on the finals. I was once again scared because it was a new environment and new people surrounded me.

There was this quarterly project in Physical Education that we had to do. It was folk dance. I was separated from Monica because it was draw lots. The class was separated in 5 groups with 8 members. It was a Saturday so my group mates decided to practice at a nearby group mate’s house.

That’s when I realized that he was one of my group mates.

And that he will change the rest of my life.
