Holly, Chapter 2

Oh my gosh! That was so awkward!  I just can’t believe that just happened. Tom’s friends were properly laughing now – they were teasing him and Tom didn’t look happy.  His normally shiny clear blue eyes Iooked dull. His blond hair looked great as normal, but his face seemed to be more dull than usual.  Those friends of his weren’t true friends – when you’re popular, people hang out with you just so they can be called popular. That’s why I feel so lucky to have such a good true friend – it’s better than having a lot of rubbish ones.

I grabbed Alexis and pulled her across the road and straight into the shopping centre. I ran immediately into Boots – surely those boys wouldn’t dream of coming in there! Alexis followed after me.  I actually needed to come into Boots because I needed some new make-up for school.

‘Alexis, will you help me find some nice make-up for school? I’ve got a budget of fifteen pounds’.

‘You? Makeup? Trust me, you don’t need it! You are one of those lucky girls who still looks stunning even without make-up. You should make the most of it before the wrinkles start settling in!’

‘Please Alexis, I just mean light and natural, nothing heavy! I just want to enhance my natural features.’

‘Fine Holly, I’ll help you choose, but trust me, you really don’t know how jealous I am of you!’ I can’t believe she just said that! Alexis is honestly the better looking one out of the two of us. She has naturally poker-straight light brown hair, which is just past shoulder length, and a perfectly cut fringe, which frames her hair perfectly. Her skin is pale and clear – she never has more than one spot at a time, and her eyes were grey with a blue tint – like the sea. I just wish I was as lucky as that!

We were in the make-up section. Alexis said that we ideally needed to get me a free makeover – the make-up artists would know what suited me. We came across a brand who had just released a new collection of makeup called “miracle.”. The makeup artist for “miracle.” spotted us straight away.

‘Are you two girls interested in a makeover?’ she asked.

Alexis did all the talking ‘Yes, my friend here is looking for some light coverage, natural looking makeup to enhance her features.’

‘For school, is it?’

‘Yes’

‘Ah well, our collection “miracle.” Will do just the trick. Please take a seat…’

‘Holly,’ I finally spoke.

‘Right then, Holly. Your skin has a naturally warm tint to it, so we are just looking to enhance this. I think the best product for you is “miracle.happy” tinted moisturiser in “beach warmth,”’ said the lady as she brushed some onto my skin. ‘That looks perfect.’ She finished off the basic base. ‘Now it’s time for the concealer.’ She picked up a silver pen. ‘This one is great for covering up spots and blemishes. ’Now,’ she picked up a little pot and a small brush, ‘This is for covering up the dark bits under and around your eyes.’  She swept it up and around my eyes. ‘Your perfect base is finished, now we’ll move onto your eyes.’ She picked up a slanted brush and a pot of beige and a pot of honey coloured eye shadow. She started applying it on my lids. ‘Start at the bottom near your eyelashes with the darker eye shadow, and blend it into the lighter one nearer the top. You can then blend it out and up towards your eyebrows, so that it fades halfway.’ She finished them with a quick sweeping motion. She gave my lashes a quick whisk of miracle. mascara in shocking black. Next she grabbed a pot of pinkish powder and a huge round headed brush. ‘Blend a small amount of blusher towards your ears from halfway up the apples of your cheeks. Dab a small amount on your temples, chin and nose, as this will finish off the look.’ She then picked up a peachy-pink lip gloss, and used a lip brush to paint it onto my lips. ‘A peach lip gloss gives you a nice natural look and looks good with the blusher. It’s also really moisturising for your lips! Are you ready to see your final look?’ She pulled a mirror from under the counter and I looked into it. Wow. No, wait, that beautiful girl in the mirror wasn’t me.  ‘Stunning!’ said the artist.

‘Stunning is an understatement!’ exclaimed Alexis. ‘Holly looks so…so…’ she trailed off. So it was me! Of course – how could I be so stupid! Okay, I’m not boasting, but I guess I did look a lot better than usual. ‘…different,’ finished Alexis. ‘As though you haven’t got any make-up on but still look perfect.’

‘I want to buy it,’ I said to the artist. The artist smiled; she looked pleased with her work. ‘So how much does all this make-up that you used on me cost?’ I asked nervously. The artist went to the till to add up the prices. While I was waiting, I looked around me. I hadn’t noticed that there had been loads of people watching me having the makeover and was now a really long, snaking queue for this particular brand!

The lady came back, ’That would be, um, fifty-seven pounds eighty,’ she announced. I noticed a couple of customers slip away when they heard the price. How was I going to pay that?

‘Let me pay for it!’ said Alexis, ‘It can be an extra little late birthday present for you,’ she added.

‘No, Alexis, you can’t do all that for me!’ I exclaimed, although I knew I really wanted the makeup.

‘No, no. It’s my pleasure. A little treat from me that’s all.’

‘Little! Alexis, I –‘ Alexis pushed past me and shoved her debit card into the machine. Sometimes she was so stubborn that you really couldn’t argue with her. I sighed. Alexis and her family had loads of money. Her dad was a surgeon and her mother had lots of money from her mother’s will. Her mother didn’t even have to work. They didn’t have to worry about money. They didn’t have to worry about rent prices. They didn’t have to worry about a big secret I’d been keeping all my life. I was dying to tell Alexis. She was the only one I could trust. I just couldn’t tell her though. It wasn’t really my secret to tell. And it was a lot more of a secret than who someone fancied…
