Alexis, Chapter 3
After I paid for Holly’s makeup, I took the bag, said thank you to the makeup lady and passed it to Holly. Now I was properly jealous of her, not only did she look great, (as usual) she now had had a professional makeover and was looking really stunning and beautiful!
‘Alexis, I love your hair. I want to straighten mine like yours. Can we go to the h – ‘
‘No! No! No! Don’t you understand? Your hair is beautiful just as it is! You just don’t realise, do you?’ I replied angrily. She just doesn’t know.
‘I just think your hair looks really stunning,’ she continued, ‘and I just thought it would be nice to have a change. And what don’t I realise?’
‘I would do anything to have hair as nice as yours! Natural, perfect waves and the colour is every girl’s dream! Golden blonde; you look like what every little girl imagines a princess would look like. Plus, straighteners can really badly damage your hair if you don’t use them properly.’
‘Oh…’ said Holly, speechless, ‘Should we go to another shop then?’ She said, edging towards the door.
‘Yeah okay,’ I replied, with Thornton’s on my mind. We walked out of the shop. I pointed at Thornton’s, which was just twenty odd metres away. ‘I fancy some chocolate,’ I said, hungrily. I liked to choose from all the different caramels and truffles they had, and then have them put in a bag for me. We walked across to Thornton’s.
‘Now, let me treat you to something. Chocolate?’ insisted Holly.
‘Oh alright then, just this once!’ I smiled. We walked into Thornton’s, and I savoured the smell. Chocolate. My favourite. We went straight to the counter, where you could choose from a variety of delicious truffles, silky caramels and crispy chocolate covered wafers.
‘Which ones do you want?’ asked Holly.
‘Oooh… I’ll have orange cream, chocolate ganache, lemon truffle,’ I looked closely at the descriptions, ‘Rasberry truffle, silky caramel, wafer crunch, milky darkness, white – ‘
‘Yes, that’ll be enough,’ Holly cut me off. I guess I was being slightly greedy. The lady at the till raised her eyebrows and put my desired chocolates piled high into a paper bag. As soon as we were out, I let the milky darkness melt in my mouth. It was delicious. It was purely swirls of milk and dark chocolate and felt like heaven had entered my mouth. Yum. ‘Enjoying those, Alexis?’ asked Holly.
‘Mmmm yeah!’ I replied.
‘Can we go to Hollister next?’ asked Holly.
‘Eah, score,’ I said, with a wafer crunch in my mouth.
‘Pardon?’ I finished my wafer crunch.
‘Sorry, I meant “Yeah, sure”,’ I said. Hollister was just opposite us, so we ran across and joined the extremely long queue.
‘Uhh! How long do we have to wait here?’ sighed Holly.
‘I don’t know, as long as it take for this queue to go down.’
‘Great.’ I could hardly hear myself think over the loud mumbling of people all around me.
‘Oh!! I wish they’d all just shut up!’ I groaned.
‘Me too.’ It seemed like we had been waiting a lifetime before the queue had finally diminished. An older boy wearing a pink and blue checked Hollister shirt beckoned us in. Ah, that famous smell of inside a Hollister shop. I loved it. This shop made me think of beaches and a hot summer in California. It didn’t take long for my eyes to adjust to the darkness – the one annoying thing about Hollister! I had once bought a shirt which I thought was navy and pink, when it was actually black and red!
I went straight to the hoodies. I wanted a nice, slim fitting thin hoodie for autumn. After about fifteen minutes, I found the right one. It was grey-brown with “Hollister California” in white and slightly cropped sleeves. It was forty pounds and size medium. I went to go and buy it. I had arranged to meet with Holly outside the shop but I saw her, ahead of me in the long queue anyway, buying some cute red shorts in the sale. I had to wait around twenty minutes before I got to the checkout.
When I got outside, I saw Holly waiting for me. She waved when she saw me and we headed off.
‘Let’s go to Pandora next,’ I said.
‘Okay,’ replied Holly. I had got her a purple leather bracelet in for her birthday in May, and she hadn’t got any charms for it yet. I had a silver bracelet and I had four charms; I thought it would be nice if we got matching charms saying something like “best friends”, or “forever friends”. I mentioned this to Holly.
When we got to the shop, I asked one of the staff where the “best friends” charms were.
‘Well, we have one that fits together which says “forever friends”, or one that you both buy separately which says “best friends”,’ said the Pandora lady.
‘Shall we go for the “best friends” charms?’ asked Holly.
‘Yeah sure, I’ve got about fifty pounds left,’ I replied.
‘I’ve got thirty-two pounds left; will that be enough?’ asked Holly.
‘The charm is thirty pounds,’ said the lady.
‘Right, we’ll have two of those then,’ said Holly. We walked over to the till and the lady got out two small plastic bags which each had a plain silver charm inside, which said “best friends”. I smile at Holly. The lady got out two Pandora bags.
‘Oh no, we’d like to wear our charms now please, ‘ I said, unlatching my Pandora which was on my wrist. Holly did the same. The lady handed us the charms and we put them on our bracelets. I paid thirty pounds on my debit card, and Holly paid thirty pounds in cash. We said thank-you and left the shop.
‘Where should we go next?’ I asked.
‘Hmmm… Claire’s?’ Holly replied.
‘Okay, but Claire’s is sooo not cool!’ I said.
‘Well I like it!’ said Holly defensively.
‘Oh alright, I guess it’s not that bad. Where is it?’
‘I don’t think it’s that far – from what I can remember. Maybe it’s on the other side?’
‘Maybe, should we just keep walking?’
‘Yeah we’ll find it eventually.’
‘Are there any other shops you want to go to? Only it’s half past three, and we should be heading back home in an hour or so.’
‘hmv!’
‘Oh okay, do you want to go in now?’
‘Yeah; I want to get that Rihanna CD, you know the one with “We found love” on it?’
‘Okay, but I haven’t got any money left apart from two pounds, which I will probably need for the bus fare on the way back. I want to look around Claire’s anyway though.’
‘Let’s go into hmv, it’s just on the right.’ We headed into hmv. ‘Where are the CDs? This store is so big!’
‘I think they’re upstairs.’ We went upstairs and looked around. I saw the pop CDs and walked across to them.
‘Oh look all the pop CDs are two for ten pounds! I think I’ll get Jessie J’s platinum CD too.’
‘Cool! I’ve got that album – it’s the best! The songs are really inspirational too! My favourite song on there is Who’s laughing now, what’s yours?’
‘Domino!’
‘Domino really rocks too!’ I grabbed a “Talk that Talk” Rihanna CD and a “Who you are” Jessie J CD and went to the checkout.
