Holly, chapter 10

I was at Amy’s house. She had invited Claire, Lauren and I round before the party. Really I felt great. I couldn’t believe how easily they had accepted me into their friendship group!

‘It’s ten to eight, we need to go now,’ said Amy. Amy’s mother, Karen, opened the car door. She was divorced, so Amy only saw her dad once a week, on Sundays. We got in the car. I was wearing a navy Hollister dress, which was my only Hollister dress. I had a lot of compliments from Amy, who was wearing a sparkly silver dress and silver shoes. Claire had a white dress, which made her look almost like an angel, but in a stylish way. Lauren had a slimming black maxi dress with mid-height black heels.

When we arrived at the house, which was a very big house, I could hear loud music coming from inside. There were a few other people waiting outside the front door. We went to join them, only to find out it was the popular group. I looked at Alexis, but she just ignored me like I wasn’t there. In fact, the whole group ignored me. Thanks, I thought sarcastically. The door opened and all I could see were bright disco lights and people. Plenty of people. Amy waved to her mother as she drove off.

Amy walked inside, followed by Claire, Lauren and I. The popular group came in after us. Lots of people came to see who it was. Adam came in and said a quick ‘Hi’ to my group, but then went over and gave Jack and Michael a punch on the back. He gave Ruby and Gemma a quick hug, then frowned, puzzled, at Alexis. In the end he gave her a hug, too.

I looked around. There were some bottles resting on a table in the living room. I went closer to them. Were they bottles of alcohol? Were we old enough to drink that? I saw someone grab a bottle and pour some into a wine glass. It was clear… maybe it was just water. I was really thirsty. I was sure it was water, so I took the bottle and poured it into an empty glass. I was absolutely parched. I took a huge gulp out of it… but instead of relieving my mouth and throat, it burned it. Not properly burnt, but it was alcohol.

‘Blurrghh!’ I spluttered, as I coughed the remaining alcohol out. I didn’t know how people actually liked this drink. I looked at the label on the bottle, ‘Yes, definitely alcohol,’ I said. Everyone seemed to be laughing at me.

‘Of course it’s alcohol! You idiot!’ said the boy who I first saw drinking the alcohol.

‘Have you never tried alcohol before?’ said Gemma, in a mocking voice.

‘How can you not like it?’ said someone behind me.

‘Uhh, I don’t know, I uhmm…’ I trailed off. Gemma grabbed another bottle and put it to her lips. She drank half a bottle in less than thirty seconds! My head was starting to feel a little cloudy. I needed to sit down.
