Alexis, Chapter 9

Uh! How could Holly do this to me? All I have done is make some new friends and she falls out with me for it. Friends like that aren’t true friends. She’s not worth it so I’m not going to bother with her anymore, I thought. Apart from that minor annoyance, I was actually enjoying my life for once. Dad had a couple of days off, mum was enjoying herself and I was popular! I had even been invited to Ruby’s house along with the group before the party on Friday. I felt so lucky.

It was Wednesday, and today I had a lunchtime detention with Mr Wilkinson, so I wouldn’t be able to hang out with the group. Oh well. The morning went by quickly and before I knew it, I was in detention. Mr Wilkinson had a big rant at me, then I had to sit in silence, writing “I will not swear and I will not answer back” again and again until the end of lunch. I know it sounds old school, but it’s what we had to do in detentions here. My hands were aching by the end of it. I felt the urge to screw up the paper and chuck it at Mr Wilkinson’s head, but I didn’t because I didn’t want another detention with him. No, definitely not. As soon as the bell went, I left the room and legged it back to my form room before Mr Wilkinson could give me any more detentions.

The rest of the day went quickly, and the next, and before I knew it, it was Friday before the big party. School had just finished, and I was meeting up with Ruby, Gemma, Mike and Jack. I was so excited! I had all my party gear in a large handbag. We got into Ruby’s mum’s car and we drove straight to her house. Her house was very big, almost like a mansion. I stood there admiring it for a few seconds before remembering who I was with and I ran to catch up with them at Ruby’s front door.

Once we were inside, Ruby lead us upstairs. The girls would be getting changed in her room, and the boys in the spare room.

‘Ah, I’m excited!’ said Gemma.

‘’Same,’ I said. We played table tennis and chatted about things for a couple of hours before Ruby, Gemma and I went upstairs to get ready. The boys stayed downstairs because all they were wearing was jeans and a t-shirt. Of course, us girls spend ages getting ready as we have hair to style, nails to paint, dresses to wear and make-up to put on.

We spent an hour curling and straightening each other’s hair. I went for a ringlet-curl style, as my hair was normally straight and I wanted a change. Ruby also had hers done into a similar style because she wanted her hair to go with her cute and preppy style. Gemma had hers stylishly poker-straight.

Next, we moved onto make-up. Ruby decided on a natural look with pale-pink lips, again to match her outfit. I went for a slightly more extravagant look, while Gemma went for the smoky eyes with natural lips.

After that we did our nails. I had some really long plain nail extensions glued on to my nails, which were then painted ruby red. Ruby had the nail extensions, but kept them natural. Gemma got hers painted a metallic blue.

Finally, we put on our dresses. Ruby’s was a floral pale pink and peach dress, which came half way up her legs from her knees. Her shoes were cute little navy flats and she was wearing a navy blazer-jacket which definitely added smartness to the look. Gemma was wearing a tight black and blue dress, which was slightly shorter than Ruby’s. She had teamed it with killer metallic blue heels and a black leather jacket.

Last but not least. The big one – what I was wearing. I had fire-red hair extensions put into my hair, and a strapless red dress. It was about the same length as ruby’s and gathered at the side. I was also wearing red velvet wedges, which were really high, and my red themed Pandora. My lips were also red and I had decided on a bit of glitter on my eyes. I looked sixteen!

We walked downstairs to tell the boys to go up and get changed, when we were stopped in our tracks.

‘Wow. You look stunning,’ said Jack.

‘Oh, thank you,’ said Ruby. Jack looked at her as though she was stupid.

‘No, not you! Her,’ he said, pointing to me. I smiled at him shyly.

‘Thanks, Jack.’

‘You’re welcome,’ he said, with a charming smile. I smiled back. Everyone else looked awkward, so I told Michael and Jack to go upstairs to get ready as the party would be starting in an hour or so.

‘So, do you like Jack?’ Ruby said.

‘He’s alright, I suppose,’ I replied, smiling.

‘I think he likes you,’ she said, laughing. I laughed. It was amazing how everyone was acting like I had always been their friend, but everything was so strange in reality, although no one would mention it.

We hung around for a bit, gossiping and talking about the party, until the boys came down. We then messed around for a bit, and watched some more TV. I looked at my watch. It was quarter to eight.

‘We should get going,’ I said.

‘Yeah, I’ll go and get my mum now,’ replied Ruby. We grabbed our bags and got in the car after Ruby’s mum, Leanne. I was so excited; my first party being popular.
