Today was a very dole and grey afternoon. The streets smelled like rain and there was not even a single ray of sunlight peaking through the blanket of dark clouds hovering above Riverdale. Seeing as it was a perfect day to stay indoors and watch movies, I decided to call Betty and the gang to come over. My mom was stuck working an extra shift at Pops Diner, so we'd have the whole apartment to ourselves. The first person to arrive was Archie. He seemed amazed when he first walked in as his eyes laid upon a big chandelier centering the living room and a balcony with curtains on the sides. I open the balcony door and admire the view of the lake.
"Isn't there such a pretty view from here?" I ask, my eyes still trained on the crystal clear waters and the trees.
"Yeah," he agreed, but as I turned around he wasn't looking at the view - he was looking at me.
As if on cue, i'd hear a loud knock on the door and I knew for certain it was Betty and Jughead. "Welcome to my humble abroad," I say as I browse the web for good movies to watch.
"This place is bigger then anywhere i've ever lived combined," Jughead commented as he placed his bag aside on the ground.
A couple throw pillows and blankets were already set up on the couch, all we needed was a movie to watch and we'd be set. "What would you guys like to watch? I'm not very good with choosing movies that will satisfy everyone," I mention as I search through all the possible selections.
"Anything that isn't chick flick or romance is fine by me," Archie replied with a chuckle at the end.
I look at Betty and Jughead waiting for their response but the tension just felt insanely strong in the room. I could tell Archie was trying to be as regular as possible with his fail attempts at easing the tension, but it wasn't working at all. We've already planned out how to patch things up between him and Betty but I guess the plans haven't been put into action considering the amount of awkwardness dominating the entire room.
Honestly, I couldn't take it anymore. I immediately turn off the television and face Archie. "Anything you'd like to say?" I ask with my arms folded raising my eyebrows as I waited for his response. The one we rehearsed.
He ran his hand through his ginger hair and took a moment to inhale and exhale before continuing. "Betty, I hate having to stop talking to you because of what happened at Pops Diner. You're one of the best friends i've ever had and I hope that despite my answer to your love confession, you still manage to forgive me and leave this in the past. You're really important to me and I hate knowing that because of me you're always so blue and broken. Please, please forgive me. I'd do anything to build up the friendship we once had."
Betty sighed a little before responding, "I forgive you, Arch. You know our bond is unbreakable. It's just going to be difficult leaving my feelings aside."
I glanced at Jughead who seemed extremely uncomfortable. He took a seat at the couch and just continued browsing through movies seeming almost annoyed and let down for some unknown reason. Archie and Betty were unaware of this for they were so focused on fixing this dilemma which i'm happy about. It's been long awaited for.
A smile formed on my face as they both hugged each other as a way of apologizing and starting off fresh. It was such a relief to be quite frank. The both of them continued chatting for a bit so I decided to leave them both to it and approach Jughead. His face was completely unanalyzable at this point, but through his dark blue eyes I could tell something was bothering him.
"Hey, everything all right?" I asked with a small smile. He didn't even bother looking at me. His eyes were trained on the television with his blank facial expression. "Everything's peachy keen," he replies coldly.
"It's good to see Archie and Betty finally make amends, right?" I tried to make conversation but he wouldn't reply anything too specific. He wasn't really even engaged in the conversation. Jughead just seemed completely distracted with thoughts so I decided to just remain quiet and stop trying.
I tapped my red nails on the wooden coffee table, impatiently waiting for Betty and Archie to finish their conversation and join Jughead and I at the couch considering things between us felt too awkward for my taste. My prayers have been answered for Archie takes the vacant spot beside me and Betty does the same for the spot beside Jug. It appears he's already found a good movie as he clicks play and sets the controller down on the coffee table. His arms were slightly crossed and still, his face was nothing but blank.
At least things with Archie and Betty are all fixed, but now there's something up with Jughead and I can't help but wonder what.
Curiosity killed the cat. That's what people say. But satisfaction brought it back.
