My name is Casey Raven, I live in a backwater place called Newfoundland Pennsylvania. My parents, Clare and Robert Raven are mostly normal. The beginning of my story takes place at my job.

I worked at a roadside diner after school named Chicks. It wasn't a bad job I guess as most jobs go. Most of the people that came in were old truck drivers, it wasn't very popular with the clicks from Wayland Heights, my high school. But that day, the day everything in my life changed. I was carrying a tray of food to my table when I heard the bells on the door jingle making me turn. He walked in like from another world, his jeans and black shirt fit him nicely, but it was his movements that caught my attention. They were effortless each step like the beginning of a dance, he sat down in the corner watching the storm outside come in.

When I came to him, to take his order he didn't even look at me. "Can I get you anything?"

"Water." His voice was like music. I turned around and walked back to get him his water thinking he was the most beautiful thing I‘d ever seen.

He sat there for hours and when it was getting time to close up I walked to him his eyes had never left the window looking out. "We're going to be closing up soon you'll have to leave." For the first time he looked at me and glared like I had just killed his dog as he stood up and slid gracefully out of the booth. He pushed past me and out of the diner.

"Jerk."

It was such a small thing, but it put me in a mood. To top it off when I went home my parents were waiting for me on the couch in the living room. I knew immediately something was wrong.

"Honey, sit down we have something to tell you." My mother said giving me her ‘please don't be upset' look. Great now I was nervous. I sat down staring at each of them.

My dad started. "Casey, honey..." Oh no now it was Casey and honey. I knew it was bad.

"What are you guys getting divorced?"

"No!" They both said in unison.

"Then what?"

They looked at each other my father answered. "My company is transferring me to another site where I‘ll be getting a promotion. You‘re looking at the head safety manager."

"That's great!" I said but then after seeing the look of ‘there's more' made the bad feeling that started before intensify.

"Uh...honey the job is in Alaska."

I don't think my jaw could drop any further without dragging on the floor. "Alaska?" I couldn't believe it. Cold, empty, Alaska. "You can't be serious!"

My mother the peace keeper stood up. "Honey calm down. I know you don't like the cold but.....It'll be alright. You'll see. You're always saying how you hate it around here."

I hate the cold?! That was and understatement. And yes I didn't like living in this town with about five thousand people. Five thousand too many. But the cold. I hate the cold. My mother's and father's minds were obviously made up so I bolted up to my room and slammed the door. Turning my music on so loud I couldn't hear my own thoughts I laid down on my bed. As if school didn't suck enough, now I would be the new kid.
