Cold and wet. That was what pounded at me as I walked into the school and what soaked me coming out of the school. I had made an agreement with Devon to practice my solo with him and by being around him he would learn to control himself around humans so he could blend. Though to be honest I didn't understand the appeal of blending. I liked to be alone but then I also hated being bored. I also couldn't stop thinking about him. When I got home I shook off the rain and shivered from the cold going straight to the kitchen to get a hot cup of cocoa.

"Hey hun." I heard my father come in and turned so he could plant a kiss on my cheek.

"Hey daddy what are you doing home?" I asked as he sat at the kitchen table.

"I got a day off can you believe it? I also requested Friday off so I can come to your big day." I rolled my eyes and groaned. My father chuckled. "I see you still hate the attention. Why did you try out?"

I sat across from him slumping. "I didn't. I was volunteered." I huddled my numb fingers around the cup warming them. Then I remembered who was most likely up in my room and got up abruptly. "I've got homework. Then I have to practice."

"Ok hun." He said as I trudged up the stairs.

I didn't stop to think much, how strange it was to be helping Devon. Or how dangerous it could become if he lost control. My only thought was that he saved me and that afforded him some leeway. The fact that I couldn't get him out of my head didn't hurt either. When I stepped into my room it was empty. I threw my back pack on my bed and frowned sitting at the piano. "Where are you?" I called for him.

"I'm here." I whipped around as the wind blew in with the rain. His black hair was hanging wet in his eyes that were a red. I forced myself not to gape at them. "Sorry. I had to go hunting and went further than I had expected to."

I shrugged looking down at the keys pushing one down meditatively. "It's ok. No big deal. Any grizzlies?" My eyes shot up to meet his.

One corner of his mouth turned up. "Yes in fact. They're my favorite as animals go."

"No contacts today?"

He walked over looking much calmer than he had the day before. "You said you wanted to know what color they were." He stopped a few feet away.

I looked into them harder this time since he was basically letting me. They weren't red exactly but had more of a bronze, coppery color. "They're not the same."

He shook his head. "They're changing. Soon they'll be gold."

"Why?" I asked and he smiled at me making my heart thump in my chest.

"My diet." He said simply.

I cleared my throat. "You seem more relaxed." He stood up and came over to sit beside me. I smoothly got up trying not to seem like I was afraid. Though being so close to him was still a bit disconcerting.

He eyed me up probably knowing exactly why I moved. "It's a little easier the more I'm around you. At first I wasn't sure but now." He did scales playfully on the piano. "I'm becoming hopeful."

I shivered from the cold that still lingered in my room. I went over and grabbed my sweater zipping it up. "You're lucky you don't get cold." I grumbled. Devon began the intro to the song and looked at me his expression stone again.

"So do you know what you're going to ask or do you want to practice first?"

I tilted my head. "I'll start off easy. How old are you?"

Still playing softly he said. "I have a feeling if I don't answer completely you'll just ask another along the same subject." He stopped playing. "I was a musician in an Opera house in France four hundred years ago. I played the piano in the orchestra. I did not realize I caught the eye of a lady who happened to be a vampire. After the excruciating pain of the change I being a new born was mad with hunger and didn't understand or know what I was. I killed my sire on accident."

I couldn't imagine the world he spoke of, but the way he talked I heard how much he regretted everything.

"It took me at least a hundred years to find another vampire that would tell me the rules. Before that I lived on instinct. Killing indiscriminately, mostly I preyed on homeless and criminals but I also had a taste for the ladies."

That made me cringe and I think he notice because he didn't continue. He watched me for a while but then began playing again. "So are you ready?"

I walked over slowly to the side of the piano. "What are the rules?" He laughed softly.

"One question asked. One answered. Ready to practice?"

I growled and pouted. "Fine but no laughing."

His gaze was dry. "I promise."

Satisfied with that I practiced. Surprisingly it wasn't as bad as I thought. After we got through it the first time I found singing in front of him wasn't so bad. Every now and then I caught a glimmer of a smile but it was gone before I could say anything. After an hour we stopped and I ran downstairs to get a drink. When I came back up he was playing a different song. It was softer and made goose-bumps stand on my arm.

"That's beautiful. What is it?" I unthinkingly sat down beside him on the bench as he played.

"I don't know. I just thought of it." He said soberly sounding almost disturbed by it.
