Weeks turned into months. Graduation came and went. I should have been thinking of my future but surprisingly I was beginning to feel apart of this place. I wasn't sure if I would ever leave. But what I did do was find an apartment above Bob's garage he was willing to rent to me for cheap. It was a small studio apartment with one small bathroom. My own place. I convinced my mother to give me the piano. After all it was a part of Devon. No matter what, I wanted to remember our short time together. He was the only person, if that's what you want to call him, that I could relate to. I know how odd that sounds but it's true.
"Casey!" I heard while watching reruns of Gilligan's island and eating ice cream. I got up and went to the window looking down at Bob who was smiling uncharacteristically.
"What?"
He held up a bottle of beer to me. "Come with me to Scotty's. Their celebrating my birthday tonight!"
I shook my head. "I'm not twenty-one Bob."
He shrugged. "Then don't drink. But come." I nodded finally and turned to get ready. My fingers trailed on the top of the grand making my way to the coat rack.
Scotty's, a local pub that most of the men that worked in the mine went after hours to relax and unwind. It was a smoke filled two sizes too small place with neon signs from fifty years ago. There was a jukebox and a stage for a live band that played on the weekends. Now it was filled with men my father worked with. He had to stay after hours for office work so he wasn't there.
"Hey Casey!" Everyone yelled as we came in the doors raising glasses.
Bob walked in front of me. "Hey this is my party."
Greg Belton, the supervisor under my father stepped up smiling. "Hey too bad you brought the star of our little town. We like her better." Everyone laughed including Bob.
"Yeah well she's my tenant so be nice."
I joined in on the fun and conversations as best I could. Mr. Jones slid me a mug of soda and smiled. "Here ya go Casey. On the house."
"I can't believe you're staying above Bob's house!" Greg said louder now that he had a few in him.
"Above my garage you drunk!" Bob threw a napkin at him. "Besides there's no where safer."
"In that under code shack?! Hah. I'm surprised Carl allows his daughter to be in such a dump!"
I shrugged. "It's not so bad. The water and heat work." Bob had put in a few decorating touches but I did notice the bad wiring. I patted Bob's shoulder letting him know how much I appreciated everything he did for me.
"Hey Bob." Greg said leaning forward just in earshot. "We found something in the mines."
My ears twitched and I barely turned my head while watching the other men playing darts drunk, which was a sight. "What?" Bob asked hushing as well making it hard for me to hear.
Greg sounded as if he shifted the stool closer. "It was a stone carving of a man. But get this.... it has Latin writing on it. One of our guys said it was something like. Destroyer of life."
Bob laughed. "One of your guys read Latin? Oh yeah. It's probable more like employer of the month. Hah. Come on Greg you can't be serious."
Greg continued in a hushed voice sounding disturbed. "Yeah but you know with those strange people up north and the Adens. Then that man Devon Bane around. Don't you find it strange?"
