Chapter 7
Two weeks passed. I didn't see Devon. I worked at the mine taking my breaks with Katie. She at least kept me distracted. "Come out with us tonight. We're going bowling and you can meet Larry." I picked at my lunch and shrugged.
"I don't know. I'm not really in the mood to go out."
"Come on. We haven't spent any time together since graduation. Please." Katie begged. "Sasha says you have to come. She misses you too." I forced myself not to roll my eyes. I liked them. I did. But there was only one person I felt right being with.
"Ok."
"Hey Casey." Greg called into the large cinder blocked room with only two folding tables and a coffee pot and microwave. His voice boomed across the nearly empty lunchroom.
"Yeah." I looked over at him. His graying hair was black with grease. He took care of the machines.
"Could you get a tread pin for the crawler for me hun?"
I stood, my break was over anyway. "Sure. Katie I'll see you tonight."
The storage room held shelves of heavy machinery parts and buckets of cleaners and oils. I went directly to the shelf where the tread pins were kept. With pin in hand I turned and stopped. The statue was uncovered. Looking at it for the first time I was captured. Both terrified and fascinated. The statue was sculpted so perfectly I almost thought it was real. A horrific expression like an animal on a human face. Teeth bared and eyes so life like I felt the malicious intent. Whoever it was or whoever created it had issues. Like Todd Mcflaren's art, hideous and beautiful at the same time. I slowly went towards it not really thinking.
"Casey." Greg came it startling me. I turned around.
"Oh. Yeah here." I gave him the pin and pushed past him.
"Hey you ok?" Greg called but I ignored him. I went back to work not thinking, not feeling. I should have wondered why but I just kept going. All that time I hadn't thought of Devon once.
"Ok kid. Let's go." My father came in at the sound of the air horn sounding the end of the day shift.
"Ok. Oh I'm going out with Katie and Sasha tonight." I said passing him putting on my jacket.
"Really... I mean that's great."
Of course he was surprised. I hadn't spent any time with anyone but Devon for months. Then it hit me again. In the car on the ride home I remembered him.
The Rolling Rocks bowling lanes were crowded. Sasha and Katie nearly knocked me over when I came through the doors. "Oh my god I didn't think you were coming." Katie said. "This is Larry." She offered up her boyfriend. Larry Holmes. A teacher in the elementary school. He just moved to our little town and from what I heard was instantly smitten with Katie. He was cute I guess as guys go. Tall with wide shoulders and strong, thick fingers. To me he didn't look much like a teacher.
"Hi." I said shaking his hand.
"Hi. So you're Casey...huh? Well I'm glad to meet you finally." His voice was deep and warming. I didn't have to fake a smile. I was glad my friend found someone so nice. We bowled and I tried to have fun but more often than not I found my thoughts returning to Devon.
