Chapter Nine

Isabel.

The sound of fabric splitting makes me turn around to see what the hell is going on. "If you damaged my seats I swear to God-" I begin in a haste, but am lost for words when my eyes focus on what is happening in the backseat of my car.

Sam is thrashing about--well, what used to be Sam-- and snarls ripping through him, more animal than human. Well, probably because there is no longer a human in the backseat of my car.

It's a wolf.

The creature snaps at the seats, it's claws scrabbling at the doors, desperately trying to break free from the restraint of the car.

"Grace?" my voice breaks from shock. Grace isn't paying attention, however. The look on her face is indescribable. Under normal circumstances, I would register her expression as recognition, but that wouldn't make any sense.

"Grace! Get out!" I screech, fumbling for the door handle, the black wolf with piercing gold eyes-- Sam's eyes-- looking frantically at Grace and I.

Grace, coming to her senses, jumps out the door, and for a moment the two of us stare bewildered into the window at the wolf. I notice Grace's hands shaking.

"What the hell is going on?" I demand, my voice barely above a whisper, although there's no reason to keep my voice low, considering we're basically in the middle of nowhere, on the edge of the woods, and the situation at hand is totally scream-and-freak-out worthy.

"I..." Grace looks so confused, which I obviously am too, but the look on her face doesn't make sense. Is there more to this than I'm seeing?

I suddenly snap out of my daze of confusion, realizing that the stupid mutt is tearing apart my interior.

I yank on Grace's arm, pulling her towards the vehicle. "We have to let it out!" I yell, and swallow the nerves in my throat, before yanking open the door, and dashing around to the other side of the vehicle, not wanting to get in that beast's path.

It bursts out of the car as quickly as the door opens, running straight to the woods, and once it is almost invisible, it glances back, it's eyes locked firmly on Grace, before disappearing into the woods.

Grace and I stare at where it had disappeared, trying to register what just happened. She takes a seat onto the frosty grass, her eyes staying on where the wolf had disappeared.

I am the first to break the silence. "Okay. Did that boy just turn into a wolf?" I ask.

Grace doesn't answer for a minute. "Impossible." she breathes, but she sounds like she's convincing herself.

"Well, what other explanation do we have of a guy suddenly disappearing, and a freaking wolf taking its place?" I demand, my voice rising with hysteria as I flail my arms in the air. I feel fear and anger building up in my chest, but not just from the crazy experience we just witnessed.

The thing is, a wolf killed my brother.

This rips open old wounds, wounds that had just started to heal. And how it burns as if it is fresh.

I blink away the tears, and stare down at Grace.

"Sam." Grace murmurs, her eyes glazing over. "My wolf.."

I am about to question her, but snap my mouth shut, running a shaky hand through my hair before placing my hands on my hips, inspecting my car. "Well, my parents are going to skin me when I get home." I say, laughing one, hard laugh at the scratch marks that scrape along the side of the car. I don't even want to think about the interior damage.

"So, now what?" I ask, because really, what are you even supposed to do after that?

"We go home." Grace says simply, but sounds faraway. She dusts off her pants as she stands, then hops in the passenger seat.

I climb into the drivers side, and we ignore the stench of wolf as we ride home in silence.

I finally say something to Grace as she exits the car.

"If I don't end up waking up in my room in about five minutes, we are screwed."
