Chapter 1

Life is filled with expectations, something is always expected of of you, whether its good or bad, it's annoying... To me at least, but then again, I wasn't exactly normal. Normal girls don't live on a reservation full of shape shifters, normal girls didn't have a vampire as a mother, or grandparents who rule the entire vampire population.

Welcome to my world, my only friends I've known my entire life, and I've never stepped foot off the reservation... Oh believe me, I've tried to leave before, but I find it extremely hard to escape with a pack of wolves tracking me. My father assured me that it was for my protection, that I was 'special' and needed to be kept safe.

There wasn't anything special about me, I couldn't shape shift, which pretty much labeled me as a failure. I was like my mom, I drank blood, I had no gifts. All I had was a pull, deep inside of me, urging me to leave, to escape my prison and find something. I had no idea what, but I'd always wanted to find out, and maybe one day... I will.

"Incoming!" I jerked out if the way as a teenage guy flew from a tree above me, briefly wondering how and why he's been up there.

"Jonah... What were you doing up there?"

He smirked, his coca eyes lit up with mischief, he leaned toward me and whispered,"I was watching for Kelly and Lou."

I rolled my eyes at the mention of the lack leader, who happened to be his sister, and her beta.

"You know Lou is so gonna beat you up again if you prank her."

He snorted, putting an arm around me lazily,"Babe... You obviously have no faith in me."

I shoved his arm off and laughed,"That's because your plans never go how you want them too!"

He sighed and flinched,"Well! What about that one time when I.... I..."

I snorted as he tried to think of one time he succeeded, coming up with nothing, he shrugged it off.

"This times different! You'll see!" He grabbed my arms be pulled me behind a tree, shushing me as two people walked by, I recognized Lou's voice, prying his hand off my lips.

I sighed,"It won't work... Your just gonna get in more trouble..."

He leaned around the tree's trunk, looking toward the girls, just as something swung from a tree, right into their faces. Jonah automatically was bent over, choking on his laughter.

His younger sister now faced him, her body covered in a thick, sticky substance.

She growled, tossing her thick, black braid over her shoulder, "Jonah!"

She growled and shifted quickly, a white wolf now in her place, I laughed as Jonah changed into a russet brown wolf. They chased each other for a while, arguing silently, snarls shouting back and forth. Lou's beta stood by the tree, untouched by the nasty stuff, her medium length black curls shiny and clean.

Her dark, forest green eyes pierced me suspiciously, I flinched and looked away, focusing on Lou as the siblings broke apart. Her fur had no sign of blood, as usual when they bickered, she was always gentle with him.

Lou growled softly and took off into the bush, her beta quick to follow, her black tail vanishing into the undergrowth.

I sighed and looked at Jonah,"Your an idiot you know that?"

He gave me a wolfy smirk, tilting his head playfully, as if to say 'they deserved it'.

I rolled my eyes,"Jerk."

Turning on my heel, heading for home, in a moment, a shirtless Jonah ran up.

"Did you see Kelly checking me out."

He flexed and smiled flirtatiously,"Shes so into me."

I rolled my eyes, a giggle slipping from my lips,"Right.... She's so into a guy who keeps trying to ruin her clothes."

His smile slipped,"Hey! I'm not after her.... Just Lou!"

I rolled my eyes,"Do you really think she knows that?"

He shrugged,"Maybe... Ah, who cares, there are a lot of girls on the reservation."

I smirked,"A lot of girls who don't want anything to do with you."

I whispered low enough for him to miss it, we'd just reached my house, a small two story house with fresh red paint. Jonah followed me inside, smiling as he spotted my mom behind the kitchen counter.

"Hey Alex!" She looked up, rolling her ice blue eyes in annoyance.

I smiled,"What's for dinner?"

It was a classic inside joke, she smirked,"Ask your father."

My dad peeked from behind her, his coca brown eyes wide,"Uhh... Pizza?"

I giggled as I noticed that he held a beater above his head, covered in a pale colored goop. As he shrugged, some off it dripped onto his nose, and nearly hit mom.

She glared at him and backed up a step, shaking her head, she laughed,"I'll order the pizza and go pick it up-"

She paused and looked to Jonah,"How many of you will be coming?"

Jonah put up both hands and started muttering to himself, the spoke louder to us.

"Well, you know my parents will come, meaning Lou will be here. Sam and Emily are likely to come and bring Kelly, Kim and Jared might come with the twins, and you know Quil and Embry will come, meaning that Claire and Kat-"

My mom cut him off, groaning softly,"So order a lot... Got it, as usual, everyone wants to come for dinner. Would you mind asking your mum if we can have dinner at you place next time Jonah?"

He smirked and shrugged,"Sure... Guess it'll be pizza two nights in a row, mom doesn't cook."

My mother rolled her eyes,"Im so glad I did need to eat human food."

She said in aggravation and shook her head at the irony,"Does any one besides Emily cook?"

Johan shrugged, his muscly shoulders rolling as he laughed. Mom sighed and grabbed the keys to her Ferrari, courtesy of grandma Bella, "Seth! Clean up while I head to the pizza place!"

Then she was gone, my dad leaned around the corner, silently begging for assistance. As I helped him scrub the goo from the walls, I thought back to my mother. She didn't eat, hence the reason she didn't cook, but I never see her leave to hunt. I pondered this for a moment, silently telling myself that I'd ask her later.

I had to admit, for someone who didn't eat, my mom had good tastes. The pizza had many toppings, I was surprised that she always remembered to get everyone's favorites. We were scattered from the kitchen, to the dining room, to the living room, all of us holding some pizza and eating it noisily.

My mom stood by the doorway to the living room, her eyes distant and dark like the night sky. My father stood next to her, his expression also troubled for some reason, and that wasn't all. They were reading a letter, it was printed on a strange piece of parchment-like paper, all of the writing neat and elegant. Immediately I knew it just had to be from my grandparents, they rarely wrote, but when they did it was very confidential.

My parents never tell me what they say, they never speak of them at all actually. I haven't seen my grandparents since I was six, they never visited and neither did we. Suddenly my mom stiffened, at once I figured I was caught staring, her eyes flitted up to me, I had been caught.

No... Her eyes were not on me, they were behind me. I turned around to see what she was staring at, only to be met with deep yellow eyes with slotted pupils, they froze me to the core and I couldn't even breathe.
