she knew exactly what the tools use was going to be. the shovel was swung heavily into the wall of the room until a dent was made into the wood. every few hits, she placed her foot into a dent, measuring if it would fit. she attempted the same with her hands correspondingly. she gave all her strength and oxygen until her exhaust was painful, but she strived and made the last hole. she descended down and took a step back to view the ascending trail of holes leading to freedom.
a deep breath was drawn as it filled her lungs. she exhaled. the shovel was dropped as she climbed eagerly to the top of this death hole. her feet fled the wall as she just hung onto the remaining wood planks of the crater. she pushed herself up. it felt tike she had just breathed for the first time after almost drowning. she exited the basement using the small window after carelessly climbing the boxes, crushing the paintings it contained. she crawled outside and sank into the grass breathing heavily as she glared at the night sky. her eyes closed as she exhaled with a faint smile of relief. she looked around her garden, seeing everything upside down. before the blood could fully rush to her head, she saw her parent's car parked in the driveway.
' mum, dad you're finally home! you need to help me ple----- ' she said jogging to the car. she reached it before she had time to finish the sentence. there was no point finishing; they weren't there.
she hit her head against the car door and shrunk down as tears rolled down her cheek in utter disappointment. she grabbed her phone - forgetting it was on her - and dialled her mother's number. the atmosphere was tense until she finally picked up.
'mum where are you!? your car is----' she cried down the phone sounding gibberish but she was interrupted.
'hi sweetie we've just gone out for a bit' her mum said calmly
'but you said that hours ag----' she replied confusedly
'hi sweetie we've gone out'
'hi sweetie'
'hi sweetie'
'h i s w e e t i e...' the sentence was repeated constantly but was being decreased every time it was said. the last phrase was said in a deep, slow, horrifying voice that was unrecognisable. it carried on until she ended the call. where were they?
