Ares, with his spear firm in his hand stood over the limp body of Perseus, he aimed the spear at his head and was about impaling him when the palace went dark,a rukus was heard in the temple as lightening shimmered in the palace.
Suddenly,a loud thunderbolt crashed into the palace hurling Ares out of the window. This was Zeus weapon at work and whosoever was wielding the weapon didn't want Perseus dead.
Thunderclaps reverberated through Athens as gods scamped to safety. Many feared Zeus was back to avenge his death.Whirlwinds swept through Athens as the great tempest of Zeus thunderbolt was unveiled. Perseus woke up to find himself staring at his mother, Danae .His wounds had all healed thanks to Apollo, god of healing who was also his half brother. His mother Danaë was the thunderbolt thief, she had become the most wanted thief in Athens by stealing the thunderbolt, the most feared weapon in Athens, even Hades feared the thunderbolt. Danaë was also in possession of Zeus shield, the aegis, which was a weapon fashioned by Hephaestus, the god of fire and forge.
The walls, they say, have ears.Soon words about the whereabouts of the thunderbolt thief reached Ares, quickly he mobilized his finest mercenaries, Bellona, the goddess of war and Aeolus, the god of air and the wind were amongst them.Together they marched to the home of Danaë, persues mother. As Perseus was getting ready to leave,he heard the shriek of his mother.Quickly,he rushed outside only to be stopped by a translucent barrier at the doorpost ,he couldn't pass through,he couldn't help his mother. This was his mother at work, she was the only one who had the power to cast such a spell. But why didn't she want him to come out? As he was about finding an alternative route,he heard the cry of his mother telling him to run and neglect coming to her help.
Perseus was stunned,he didn't phantom why his mother wanted him to run and leave her behind, like a mortal coward would do but he was a god not a mortal so he refused to yield to the pleading instruction of his mother.
He decided to peer through the window then did he realise why his mother cast the spell on the door post.Perseus was surrounded by Ares and his compatriots including some centaurs. His endangered mother,he noticed was on her kneels, her back facing Ares with his spear aimed at her head. She was going to die if he didn't go outside to help her.He tried his fist on the barrier but it didn't budge. He cried out to his mother to undo the spell so he could help her but she refused.Ares made a bargain with Perseus, the thunderbolt for his mother's life.Quickly,Perseus brought out the thunderbolt ready to trade it for his mother's life but his mother refused to undo the spell she cast on the doorpost.Ares became fed up with Danaë's refusal to undo the spell,in rage he lifted Danaë up,plunged his spear through her chest then hurled her towards the doorpost of the house.Danaë hit the doorpost in a thud as her blood was smeared on the translucent barrier.Perseus couldn't believe what he saw,he fell to his knees transfixed as he tried to reach his mother who was choking in her blood.
The barrier was still up even while his mother bled to death. His mother pierced her hand through the barrier ,clenching Perseus hand she mumbled something and Perseus found himself on earth, his mother had teleported him to earth using her spell. She had laid down her life for his.Perseus, sobber and enraged prayed to charon, the ferryman at the entrance of the underworld to grant his mother's soul safe passage to Elysium, the glorious abode of dead gods.
Perseus vowed to avenge his mother,he vowed to take up the task of nemesis, the god of vengeance on Ares.
