Chapter Eight

Before Perseus left,the brothers promised to get the thunderbolt ready before he returned.Leaving Polyphemus behind, Perseus embarked on one of his greatest quest.

Perseus knew what he had to do,he only had to kill Rhoetus,a Cyprian centaur who was the leader of all centaurs.Whoever killed Rhoetus would automatically become the new leader of all centaurs as it was the law of centaurs.

Perseus knew well that killing Rhoetus, a bull-horned centaur wasn't going to be easy so he conjured a plan.

Perseus was captured at the entrance of Rhoetus Palace,it was part of his plan.He was imprisoned after being tortured.

Laying feeble in his cell, he heard someone call his name,someone he recognizes well,STHENO.

Stheno was the sister of Medusa, the eldest and most ferocious of the gorgon sisters one of which was decapitated by Perseus.

Stheno was captured by the centaurs while fleeing Athens.Rhoetus,being aware of the enmity that existed between Perseus and Stheno included their names in the gladiatorial contest that was scheduled for the next day, a contest Rhoetus was sure Stheno would win.

It was said that whosoever wins six of his/her contest would be set free.

Stheno was thrilled when she discovered who her opponent was,the chance to avenge her sister's death was presented to her on a platter of gold.

Perseus didn't care about Stheno, his attention was on Rhoetus,if he could kill Rhoetus Stheno wouldn't be a problem.

The next day,Perseus and Stheno were summoned,the rules of contest were read to them,they were each given a weapon and sent to the arena where they were told to fight till death.

Rhoetus, as Perseus predicted,was in the arena anxiously waiting to see the faith of Perseus.

  As the fight began,Perseus kept his attention on Rhoetus, he watched his movement as he made sure he wasn't fighting far away from the dias where he stood.
 
  Stheno charged at Perseus with her sword as she aimed for his head, he ducked the swerving blade as it sliced through the air,it was a move Perseus had read well.

Clashes of sword rang through the arena as Perseus and Stheno fought each other.

Stheno planned on decapitating Perseus the same way he decapitated her sister as she kept aiming her blade at his head whenever the opportunity presented itself, but Perseus being a good swords man countered all her moves much to her frustration.

With a shriek she lunged in the air tossing particles of sand in Perseus face as she ascended, with her two hands firm on her sword and aimed at a partially blind Perseus,she descended, the blade of her sword struck Perseus raised sword breaking it to pieces with the impact plunging Perseus to the ground.

Stheno, laughing hysterically approached a crawling Perseus,her leg struck Perseus hard on his side causing him to jerk as he moaned.Perseus kept crawling towards the broken piece of his sword.

Stheno raised up her leg and brought it hard on Perseus head as the crowd in the arena Jeered.

A watching Rhoetus,crouched in his dias,was gleeful at the sight of the ruined Perseus.

Stheno, desperate to make Perseus suffer for killing her sister kept on pummeling a visually impaired Perseus much to the delight of Rhoetus and the spectators.

  Standing over the limp body of Perseus, she raised her sword as she aimed the glittering blade at his head.Quickly,with a flick of his leg,Perseus kicked Stheno hard on one of her legs causing her to lose balance and topple on Perseus who quickly brought out the sword forged by the three cyclops brothers.With the click of a small button the sword protruded piercing the falling Stheno on her chest as she fell helplessly on Perseus.

The crowd stopped jeering as every where went silent.Perseus drew out his sword from Stheno's bleeding chest and decapitated her much to the fury and astonishment of Rhoetus.

With a flick,Perseus lunged his sword towards Rhoetus who watched as the blade grazed the side of his face,spilling blood as it few past him and embedded its self in a wall beside him.

Perseus missed,a miss he would forever live to rue.Quickly,herds of centaurs surrounded Perseus waiting for Rhoetus order.

Rhoetus,still amazed at the heist Perseus tried to pull off dispersed the centaurs,he was going to fight Perseus in the arena just like every other gladiatorial contest.

Returning Perseus sword to him,he stepped into the arena.The jeering stopped as everywhere went silent.

Rhoetus was known to be a vicious fighter.At the age of six,he murdered his father who was the king of all centaurs thereby taking his place.

  He didn't stop at killing his father,he killed his mother and siblings including all those who opposed his reign.
Rhoetus was the youngest ever reigning centaur.It was rumoured that Rhoetus assisted Hades in the killing of Zeus,the god he despised the most.

  This was the creature Perseus was about to fight,the god of all centaurs.
