There's this girl I used to know Oh, it seems a lifetime ago Her dark, bright eyes still smile at me A gesture now only alive in my memory
Its easy to recall that black leather book of hers Lyrics of her favourite songs imprinted on the pages Her off key voice still singing them out loud Whilst I was still learning to fit into a crowd
Sometimes it feels like just yesterday That she was introducing me to Swift's music And gushing about the novel-based movies Of a vampire and a boy with shape-shifting abilities
It didn't matter that I didn't watch them It didn't count that I never kept up with the trend She had a way of engulfing me with her high spirits Made me feel like I was the one she'd gone to the movies with
And how easy it is to picture her flushed cheeks When she landed her sights on that boy she liked Though it isn't as easy to recall the manner of her speech I'm certain she gushed about him every once in a while
It still hurts to see her heartbroken eyes An unwelcome image that pops into my mind From when he'd left her hanging from the edge And she told me she wished she was more like me instead
And I now remember that I never got around To asking her why she'd ever say something like that I never got to ask her what she thought made me stand out I don't know if I ever will, and that kind of hurts my heart
I still remember you— your eyes, your smile but, try as I may, never your voice and I know I've never said this before But I still carry you with me Even if the last time I saw you was about five years ago
Thank you for hugging me the very first time I publicly cried Thank you for noticing the awkward girl everyone overlooked Also, thank you for making me feel like I was worth your time And I'm sorry I'll never know if these words find their way to you.
