Watch closely; the grin that tugs at her mouth, and the laugh that almost spills out. But also watch closely now, the way she freezes mid laugh.
Her lips are parted, mouth half open but no sound -- nothing comes out. Watch closely; something changes in her simple eyes. It loses that merriness, something flickers and then dies. Her gaze loses focus and her shoulders drop low.
Watch closer now; she stares at the plate in front of her but there's no enthusiasm to devour the food. Seated at her favourite diner amongst those she loved, and those who claimed to love her too. A nice night out , and she'd entered the place with flair but an hour or so has passed and her lung's running out of air.
Watch closely now, please, because no one else does.
You see the smile on her face, and eyes empty of tears. What about the spirit that's been chipped away at over the years?
