Mama,
I'm coming home early. Technically, I'm not supposed to tell you, but I just wanted to give you a heads up so that I don't surprise you. Have you been taking your heart medication? I know Richard can be a little off-putting, but he's always taken such good care of you. I'm so sorry for letting you down. I thought that the whole gossip thing would keep me in longer, but I crossed a line. I'll be home soon.
I love you so much,
Adaeze
Our headlights slice through the thick fog. I can see the beads of perspiration on Steph's forehead.
"Uh, are you sure we're going the right way?"
"Hush!" She quickly silences our concerns, eyes trained on the road. "I need to focus. Just... be quiet for a while."
Since William left to take care of his ailing sister, we've been left to fend for ourselves on the long drive from the airport to our temporary home in Thailand.
"How much longer?" Zara whines.
It's a crying shame that they didn't kick her off the show along with Adaeze and Co.
"Zara," Steph intones slowly, "I swear. If you do not shut the fuck up in exactly negative five seconds I will reach into your throat and SCOOP YOU DAMN LUNGS OUT." She swerves off of the road for a second but manages to straighten up.
And so, we sit there in dead silence, staring at each other, wide-eyed with fear.
"Do you think we're going to die?" Valerie whimpers.
"It's just a bit of fog. Don't stress it. We'll be at the resort in about an hour," Carmen reassures her gently.
I glance at Anna and check her face for a trace of fear. Surprisingly, her expression is one of complete calm.
"Are you okay?"
She turns to me and smiles. "Yeah, of course. What? Are you scared?"
"Of course not," I reply quickly.
She gives me a knowing smirk and I suddenly feel very tiny.
"Really, I'm not scared. Steph is a great driver."
"Okay, scaredy cat," she teases, pushing me gently.
I roll my eyes and push her back.
"Can y'all not do that? You're rocking the car," Valerie hisses virulently.
Once again rolling my eyes, I rest my head on the window and immediately regret it. "Ow." Just as I set my head on the glass, we run over a rocky path. Sitting straight again, I groan and look around for something to do.
