My eyes open. It's all white. For some reason no matter how many times I wake up, no matter how many years I've been blind. I expect to see something... anything. That's just not how things work. I wasn't effected by being blind. It doesn't stop me.
I'm 14 now, most of you remember me from when I was just a baby. I'm grown up now, well kinda. The pack doctor said I'm falling behind in the growth scale, But can't see myself so I don't care.
"Storm I need you to go out to the barn for me and... and feed Moon for aunt Emma." My father, Max stutters out scaring me.
He's has problems with going to the barn. After my mom passed away.
"I'm sorry love I didn't mean to scare you."
My mom was apparently really good with horses. So he doesn't like to be out there. He's not the leader he used to be with out her. He's gone a little insane if I'm honest.
My mom. I don't remember her much. She died when I was 3 but I know that there's definitely a part of me that went missing with her. Not just me... the whole pack. Everyone clearly had a love for my mom. She was the perfect leader. She had love for everyone and never gave up on anyone.
My father is so broken from her loss. She's buried in the front of the pasture out front. Where he put her the first day he met her. He'll sit there for hours a day just going over pack stuff to keep her in the loop like old times as he says. He misses her like a lot.
"Of course dad anything for you." I tell him.
I follow his voice to the door way and find his cheek with my hands, placing a soft kiss.
I slide down the railing of the stairs, then grab a horse treat from the bag next to the door. We keep them there so I can find them easier.
Moon. The engraved name plate reads.
"Hey there boy. You hungry?" I ask the soft horse.
He lets a nicker out telling me yes.
I never understood it, but I feel like horses understand me. They always respond to me when I talk to them. They push me with their noses in the right direction when I'm lost. They protect me and make sure I'm safe.
I grab a flake of hay and place it in his feeder.
I hear the barn door open and close.
"Storm, can you take Lightning out?" Emma asks.
"Yeah of course." I say.
I walk slowly down the line of horses dragging my hand feeling for his name.
Lightning. Here we go.
I find his halter, without doing anything he walks over and places his head in it. These are the things they do.
"Good boy." I whisper.
He takes the lead and brings me to the tack room.
He goes slow and keeps his head low for me to have my arm over his neck. Just like a guide dog.
I don't get it. All the horses do this like it's their job.
Lighting is running like a wild horse. I don't know where but I trust him. His feet hit the ground with a thud. Strong muscles flex under me. His breathing is heavy yet he doesn't stop. I stay close to his neck so a branch won't knock me off.
He slows to a walk then he stops. The sound of rushing water hits my ears. River. He must have been thirsty. I let him have slack in his reins to drinks. He gladly takes my offer.
"I can't wait to shift." I whisper petting his sweaty wet neck.
Soon after I got home all of the pack was awake. To the sounds of it something is going on. It smells of cleaners.
"Where's my dad?" I ask.
"I'm right here sweetie." He says placing an hand on my shoulder.
"What's going on?" I question.
I the response I got was not what I ever would have thought in two thousand years.
"Your brother Chase is coming home."
I HAVE A BROTHER? There's no way. I'm an only child. Why has no one mentioned a brother to me? Thanks everyone so much for the heads up. He's gonna be our alpha? Where was he when mom was fighting for her life?
