Chapter 1: Zoe's POV
It was a stormy, dark day when my mum told me about The Purge.
"Zoe, sit down," she said "I need to tell you something." When mum uses that tone, it means something bad. I looked into her worried eyes.
"Tonight will be very..." she paused. "Chaotic." Mum sighed then continued.
"The government has allowed one night every 10 years for any crime to be committed without punishment. You have been through one Purge before but you were to young to remember."
"Your joking." I stated. I rolled my eyes and raised my eyebrow.
"I swear on my life." Mum replied. She only ever said that when she was dead serious. My shoulders dropped and my heart started beating faster.
"But that's insane!" I cried.
"I know darling, but the government are saying the increase in population is too high so they need to even it up with deaths."
"Then what are we going to do to protect ourselves?" I asked, still convinced what my mum was saying is a joke.
"Dad and your brother are out buying a protection system."
The first person to come through the door was Dad. He had some paint splotched jeans on and a black t-shirt with bright orange suspenders over the top. His black hair was looking like a birds nest. Behind him came my brother, Charlie.
"Mary! We found exactly what we were looking for!" He exclaimed coming over to mum. "Charlie here found it hidden behind packets of nails in the warehouse. Only cost us 100 bucks!"
"Not to bad, not to bad." My mum replied with a glum expression. Dad was the only one who could stand happy in a situation where we could all be doomed.
"Anyway Charlie and I had better set this up." Dad said, rattling the box.
"James!" Mum cried "Don't break it!"
My dad smiled "Even if we do break this," he said, rattling the box "We still have these." He pulled out two guns. My mum gasped, but before she could reply Dad and Charlie ran out of the room.
I spent my last hours before The Purge began texting my boyfriend Henry. He said he wanted me to know that I would survive, and in the end we would meet up again. I really didn't believe him. I was scared stiff and my whole body was shaking. At one point I felt a tear running down my cheek. I checked my watch. It was 5:40pm. 20 minutes till The Purge began. I texted Henry and told him that I had to go. I figured that if this 'Purge' was real, then I had better spend time with my family, incase anything did go wrong.
I looked out the window. It was raining hard and the sky was very cloudy. Mum, Dad, my brother and I were all huddled on the couch. No one said a word. Dad and Charlie had put all the protection systems together, set them up all around and loaded the SIG Pro Pistols with amo. Mum had prepared food for the whole night and put that on the table. As for me... I just stayed out of the way. I checked my watch. 30 seconds until The Purge began. All of a sudden the TV switched on. "Attention all citizens. The Purge is about to begin. Police services will be out of service for 12 hours, and hospitals will stranded. The criminals have been released from their prisons, and weapons have been scattered around the area. The alarm will go off in a few seconds to state the beginning of The Purge. If you manage to survive, another alarm will go off in 12 hours to state the end." The screen went black. A ear blasting noise came from outside. Then a speaker went off "The Purge has begun."
