Chapter 2: Jennifer | The First Encounter...

Title: The First Encounter...

POV: Jennifer

“Okay, dad! Just stay out of me. I get it!” I shout at my dad, who’s inside my room. He’s walking back and forth across my room, inspecting every things.

“Hey, don’t shout at me. After all, I am still your father. So give me some respect.” He says gently, his hands on his back. His wearing a brown suit that is perfect on him. But I don’t mind it. I still hate him, after all he has done to us. To my mother. To Nathan. To me.

“Thanks for reminding me, dad.” I mumble, and he looks at me. He takes off his glasses and rubs his eye, then puts it back on.

           “Look. I know, I’m not a perfect father – “

           “and a husband.” I add.

“Okay. Just let me finish. I know I’m not a perfect father and a perfect husband to your mom. But, please. Please, give me a chance to correct things. Just give me another chance, a chance to be your dad.” He says, his eyes are pleading.

“I’ll try. But now, please get out of my room. I’m just gonna fix my room.” I say. He looks at the whole room and then looks at me.

“Okay.” He says, he leaves my room and I shut the door.

It’s his fault. All of this. Why I look like this, why my attitude is like this. It’s all because of him. At 3 o’clock in the evening on Friday, there will be a Residence Tour. My beloved father registered me so that I can go to it. I get outside so that I can wander around. I get out of the Ferguson house and just walk. I look up and see the beautiful Whitney Hall Quad. There are 2 benches, facing each other, and there’s also a one sidewalk. There is a building, the color is brown and has three doors (in front, left and right), and has many windows. There are bushes, it’s like a pattern, from green to violet to green to violet. A big tree is planted on the other side of the sidewalk, its leaves are color violet pink.

I don’t know what kind of tree is it.

Two girls sit on the bench and they seem very close. The girl is talking, while the other one is laughing. I look at my feet, trying to ignore them.

The University College has three residences, Sir Daniel Wilson Hall, Morrison Hall, and Whitney Hall. Sir Daniel Wilson Hall is named after Sir Daniel Wilson, a University College Professor of History and English. He was the president of this school from, what? 1880 to 1892? I don’t know. The Sir Daniel Wilson Hall was a men’s residence. It was located in the cloisters. Now, it’s official space. The hall can hold 200 students and is divided into six houses: McCaul, Loudon, Hutton, Wallace, Taylor, and Jeanneret.

The Morrison Hall is the newest residence of University College, it opened in 2005. It was named (I only heard it from some random I-don’t-know person) by Russell and Katherine Morrison, graduates of the University of Toronto. The hall can accommodate 270 students in single rooms. The Morrison Hall is divided into five houses: Landsberg Lewis, Bratty, Langley, Perron, and Wolfe.

And the Whitney Hall was built in 1931 as women’s residence. It is named after Sir James Whitney, the premier of Ontario from 1905 to 1914. Whitney Hall is home to 250 students in single and double rooms. It is divided into four houses: Ferguson, Falconer, Cody and Mulock.
