"Sooo you're absolutely sure we can't fly?"

"No Sophia, for the one millionth time! We can't fly. We aren't full angel. We are only half."

"Well what the hell? What's the point of even being angel if we can't fly?"

"Uggh." Adam shakes his head and then slaps his forehead out of frustration. I've only known him two days and I've already made it my mission to bug the hell out of him. Deep down though I'm pretty sure he likes it.

"Sure Sophia, go climb that water tower and jump off. You can fly."

Ok, maybe he doesn't like it.

I snicker at him and turn my eyes back to the road. We were driving back to my former home, I was excited but dreading this at the same time, and to ease the anxiety, I got the idea to come up with as many ways to piss Adam off as possible. So far, the count is almost a hundred. He's very easily agitated. But thats probably got a lot to do with he hangover I'm sure he has.

He got wasted last night in order to make himself pass out. The reason being was because I was going to go through my change and that is nothing pretty. It's painful, more painful than anything you could ever imagine. Passing kidney stones as you're pushing out a baby, while you're on fire couldn't even compare. That painful.

When you make the decision to join the hunters, your body has to complete the change. It starts with a high fever, no big deal there. Then you have the initiation dream. That was actually pretty cool. You stand in front of a counsel, which is composed of other angels, then three swordsman slice strikes along your arm. The first strike represents courage. The second is knowledge, and the third is strength.

I remember waking up from the dream and touching my arm, the marks gave me a powerful feeling. Then the change started. Every single bone snapped in my body, and replaced themselves with stronger ones. Kind of like steel. Even though Ive got human characteristics, I'm tougher, faster, and harder to kill.

The reason for my kind are a little harder to explain. Our technical name is "Light seeker" but these being modern times we find that a little cheesy so we prefer "hunter". We hunt things that are on a mission to start a zombie apocalypse. Freaky right?

The book of Zechariah says "And the LORD will send a plague on all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths." Well, long story short, a few years ago three different countries attacked and now we are where we are. But it wasn't God who started this.

There are spirits called converts. These spirits basically ride the fence of good and evil. Basically they sit and wait for the big war, the REAL apocalypse. Once they think they've figured out who is going to win then they'll pick a side. Little do they know the lord will not take them.

Their little plan will backfire.

Satan has gotten to some of these converts through his demons. The demons use the coverts as vessels. The converts possessed by the demons wish to go around and make zombies. Zombies make other zombies and so on and so forth. This is actually kind of genius on his part.

Satan's plan is to use the zombie bite as sort of a seal to the fate of whoever is bitten. Once you are bitten you are evil, driven to kill. That's what damns you to hell. No matter how good you were as a human, that all goes out the window with one bite. And its transmited fast too. If we don't stop the converts then their plan will be executed. All those souls in hell will go to war with those in heaven. And then.. We're all f*cked.

The only thing from keeping this from already happening is they are missing one key element. A certain fallen angel's blood. The Angel of Pestilence. Neither I nor Adam, who is sort of my leader, know where this angel is.

When Satan was cast from heaven he was known as the 'Angel of light'. All his minions aren't created by him since God is the only one who creates, but anything that follows him we all categorize them with the Angel of light. Hence our names being Light Seekers. The Angel of Pestilence fell along with him.

Where do I fit into all of this?

Family blood line. If you know Greek mythology you know about demi-gods. Hercules as an example. Angels for christians, are sort of like the Greeks Gods. Before Satan was cast down, he was able to test other angels. The ones who passed his test, failed God's and were cast down with him. Those angels, so lonely for home, would befriend and sometimes sleep with humans often producing offspring. Half angel half human. Same things as Demi-gods. God looked down on these but knew they'd be useful later. He gave certain bloodlines the chance to redeem themselves when the time came.

Mine happened to be one of those. Your whole family is included in this bloodline but until something drastic like this happens it isn't activated. Which means my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were all skipped.

Adam found me, and told me I had a decision to make. On the one hand I didn't want to leave me family, I have a three year old little boy and a husband. On the other, the Seekers are dwindling in numbers fast. The converts are everywhere, and they've been close to finding the Angel of Pestilence numerous times, but were always stopped by us.

I felt it was my job, in order to protect my son and prevent an actual zombie infestation, to join.

So here I am on the road back home, going to see my son one last time, with a grouchy hungover old man, and shitty radio stations.

"Almost there." Adam says obviously grateful.

I hold back my smile. "Yep. Time sure does FLY when you're having fun."

"Sophia.." He says warningly.

"So, when we get there are you going to sit and watch everything?" I ask hoping he would get my need for privacy. It would be the last bit of alone time I would have with my son.

"No, you just drop me off at the nearest bar. Come get me when you're done."

"Alcoholic."

"Juvenile."

I smile and change the station. Lumberton, Texas- 33 more miles.
