For each minute that passed the sun seemed to set deeper but that didn't worry the two acquaintances.Emerald walked alongside Lance, swaying her hips side to side as the warm grainy sand ran through her feet with each step. They enjoyed the silence of the waves among them as Emerald continued to devour the vegetable she'd been craving.
"You know, this a beautiful place.." Lance said, breaking the silence as he admitted what he'd been thinking for weeks.
Emerald simply nodded, then turned her head to look at him. "Cmon now, I'm sure America got all deh finer places..." She nudged his shoulder playfully and he chuckled as he shook his head.
"Nah.. you don't get it. I mean yeah there's beautiful places in America as well, but.. what y'all got going on here is different. The culture, the dances, the food, the appreciation of family and unity. That's some real shit."
She took in his words as she nodded, quite impressed by his passion towards her hometown, she didn't expect that from him.
"Yuh like it here, huh? I thought because you rich.. you be all sleek and up yaself.." She admitted.
"I thought you'd no like it here, because of.." She shrugged and continued. "We unfortunate, poor but you got everyting back where yuh stay."
"Hey.." He began. Lance frowned as he heard what she said, he reached closer as he snaked his arm around her waist, pulling her smaller frame close to him. She was slightly shocked by the sudden close contact but she definitely wasn't complaining.
"I ain't like that.. but really, money, all those riches, it's all a joke. None of it means anything, if you have happiness and unity like you do here, you've won in life. That's the ultimate wealth."
She wondered how he was so deep, never lacking emotion in the words that left his lips. Funny how a wealthy man from America, was much wiser and down to earth than most of the island boys she'd been messing with.
"I like yuh.. You different." She bluntly replied as she threw the corn in a nearby bin they passed.
Lance smiled, a sense of accomplishment overwhelming as he tightened his grip on her waist.
"I like you too, Emerald." He stopped her in their tracks as they stood in front of each other.
"You already know that." He chuckled as he caressed her chin.
Emerald looked down and smiled as she felt the heat in her cheeks as well as the warmth of the setting sun. Lance waited until her eyes met his once again and he almost lost it.
Her eyes had to be the most beautiful feature, amongst all of them.
He was in a trance each time he gazed into them, like now as he found himself leaning in. Emerald didn't hesitate to close the space between them as she pressed her soft lips on his own. They fluttered their eyes shut in sync as their lips moved with each other. Like two colliding puzzle pieces the two of them continued to share the intimate moment, Lance's hands gradually running up and down her sides.
Emerald broke from the kiss as she then looked down at her small watch. She widened her eyes realizing she'd promised her parents to be back an hour ago, plus she was to prepare the dinner.
Guess time flies when you're with someone deserving of every second of it.
"I got tah leave.." She stated, a hint of annoyance in her voice. She didn't want to part from this place he'd now made magical to her. She didn't want to leave the way he was making her feel but most importantly.. Emerald didn't want to leave him.
He frowned to but took ahold of her right hand as he understood.
"Tomorrow?" He asked and he didn't have to go into detail because she already knew.
"Same time." She smiled and he chucked.
"Well..." Lance began. He brought her right hand up to his lips as he pressed a soft kiss to her hand.
"Till next time then, Island Goddess." He cheekily said and Emerald playfully rolled her eyes at his exaggeration.
"Babyboy, it's emerald." She replied as she flicked her hair, causing Lance to laugh.
"Mhmmmm, nah. I prefer mine."
They exchanged goodbyes and as both of them began to walk in different directions, they turned to look at each other in union and Emerald felt butterflies in her stomach, turning back as she resumed her journey back home.
Her trip was shorter than usual because all she could think of was Lance and how he was making her feel, how smart he was and how opposite he was from the wealthy man stereotype. He'd really surprised her.
Emerald still had the same bright smile on her features as she took off her slippers at the doorstep and wiped her feet at the mat before entering.
As she walked in she could smell the amazing aroma of cou-cou and flying fish. Her favorite. Only problem was it was supposed to be her making it instead of her mother.
She tip toed into the kitchen to see her mother steering the pots and she instantly felt bad.
"Ma.." She spoke out and her mother continued to steer, not hearing her.
"Mama, I'm home!" She said much more louder and he mother turned to face Emerald as she then shook her head and placed a hand at her hip.
"You silly gyal, where you was?" She questioned as she squinted her eyes.
Emerald swallowed because she never lied to her mother, their bond was too strong for such foolishness. But today she simply had to.
"Helping Mel clean down ha house..." She added a sigh of exhaustion and her mother turned down the pots.
"Oh baby.. Is her mama well?" Her mother asked. Mel was Emerald's best friend, they had been together like two peas in a pod since their childhood.
She nodded and swallowed the guilt she was feeling, she hated lying to her second best friend, her mother. "Yeah yeah.." She laughed nervously. "She told me to pass her greetings to yuh."
Emerald's mother nodded as she headed back to her pots, working on her food.
"You hungry emmy?" Her mum called out and she replied with a no as she headed upstairs.
All she wanted to do was head to sleep, dream of the man she'd been with earlier. After all, some dreams felt like reality too.
