Moonlight Date.
All this effort was time consuming. After the two had parted ways Lance had found a way to arrange a small dinner on the beach. He'd hired a simple waiter to arrange the table, candles and the display perfectly; he wanted this to go just right. But now he was drained, disappointed and tired of waiting. It was now nearing 11:00PM and Emerald should've been here an hour ago.He frowned deeply as he furrowed his brows. He was mad, but he didn't want to take the blame on her, it couldn't have been her fault. She wouldn't stand him up like that, right?
"Man.. Emerald.." He sighed to himself as he looked around the beach. The dinner display was small but you couldn't miss it with all the candles lighting up the place. He shook his head, growing impatient as the minutes of the hour passed.
Annoyed and heavily disappointed, Lance stands up from his table, ready to depart back to his hotel room.
"Lance!" He snaps his head to the right and squints as he notices a small figure. The silhouette makes longer and faster strides until her beauty is admirable. Emerald.
She smiled apologetically as her eyes then drift to the table and she stops in her tracks. Emerald brings her hands to cover her mouth as she looks at the clean and posh set-up before her.
"Oh my gosh.." She says as she looks at him and he simply chuckles. To him, it's a basic and cheap effort of displaying a romantic dinner; but to her this is a huge deal. Nobody has ever taken the time to do this for her, none of her past boyfriends would even do this.
Lance walks over to her side and pulls her chair back for her to sit in. She sits down and observes the food, instantly getting hungry as Lance sits in front of her. He begins to nod as his eyes trail her appearance. Now in his opinion Emerald always looked stunning; but tonight she had taken extra devotion in her appearance and it had Lance feeling some type of way.
"You look fine as hell, Emerald." He wanted to let her know it, even though she probably did.
She simply blushed as she smiled, flashing her pearly whites that complemented her features instantly.
"I'm suh sorry I was late, my ma woke up and den Mel and I had tuh get read-"
"Emerald, it's fine." He interrupted her in the middle of her long explanation. Emerald remained still in her seat, she felt she needed to explain; what she did wasn't right.
"All'at don't matter right now, you're here. That's all that matters." He assured her and she nodded. He always knew what to say at the right times, it was one of the few things Emerald adored about him.
He gestured at their food and Emerald nodded as they both picked their forks and knives.
"How long it take yuh to fix this up?" She questioned as she began take a bite at the small fish cakes on her plate, her favourite.
"It took me about three hours, I made all this myself." He smiled at her as he lied and chewed her food.
She was almost impressed but then she remembered all the food on the table was traditional Bajan food, there was no way he even knew half the food on the table.
Emerald furrowed her eyebrows and tilted her head as she looked at him then to the side. "No wey you guh make all this, dont lie now." She said as she took another bite, shaking her head.
Lance chuckled as he continued to chew, then continued. "Aight aight, you got me. But still I wanted to make sure it was perfect."
She smiled slightly, continuing to devour her food. They both ate in silence until Emerald's mind began to wonder about him.
"What yuh parents like?" She asked. In a way she felt entilted to know, after she was quick to share about her father, she was hoping he'd do the same.
He took a deep breath as he then took a sip of the fine whine.
"They're.. yeah I guess they aight." He shrugged as he then looked at her. Emerald gave Lance a confused stare, there was clearly more than he was telling her.
He sighed a bit then continued.
"They cool..I mean they provide everything for me, been blessed with the highest education, the finest things in life, yanno?"
Emerald nodded in admirance, the things he mentioned were qualities to die for. Sure her mother loved her but at times she couldn't help be selfish, wondering what life would be like if she'd been blessed with a wealthier family.
"But.. I don't want none of that shit." He said as he then proceeded to eat.
Emerald was nodding until she heard his next sentence, she instantly felt confused.
"Wha you mean you don't want that, anyone here gon die for your place.. you have too much opputunity tah do so much, you hah everting given tuh you onna pitchfork.." She frowned, slightly mad at him. Mad at the fact that everyone on this small island dreamed of being wealthy, dreamed of never having to work so hard. Mad at the fact that he had so much advantage to do what he wanted, whilst there were people like herself who's education couldn't even get them far in life. She'd come to conclusion that he was simply ungreatful.
He sensed her become a bit uncomfortable at what he'd said, but she didn't understand no one did. By now she was probably going to tell him to suck it up and realise that he's blessed and his life is too easy.
"You don't understand Emerald." He placed his fork down, then took a sip of the wine and she did too.
"I didn't ask for this, I mean like.. I wish I'd had a choice to do what I want to do and really... find myself."He sighed.
"My parents wanted me to model out exactly what they were, which growing up I had no problem but... It's times like this where I'm grown up and there's that question.." He took a pause as he looked into her eyes.
"Who even am I though?... And it's that question that lets me know I ain't even happy."
There was a pause and then Lance just resumed eating his food once again, he looked up at her and she was still looking at him, a small frown plastered on her face.
She'd been so quick to jump to conclusions not knowing that his whole lifestyle had been practically forced onto him. She couldn't begin imagine what that felt like, her mother always encouraged her to pursue whatever she wished.
Emerald reached her hand over the table and placed her manicured hand over his own.
Lance smiled slightly as he held her hand in his, making him chuckle slightly."Now dat you explain... I understand where yuh come from.." She said and he nodded.
"But it's never too late, tuh change how yuh live Lance." He widened his eyes slightly and she grinned, nodding her head assurimg him she meant just what she said.
