A couple of days later, after the sleep-over, I packed a backpack full of my credentials and met Hillary at the bus station for the next ride to Fort Lauderdale. We told our families we were going on a trip for biology class (Hillary's idea for an excuse.) They hesitantly bought it. The funny thing- we didn't even take biology.
We met up near the stop by my house. Hillary came dressed in a blue sweater, leggings, and, of course, her amulet was strapped around her neck.
She had her backpack on her back, which she didn't unpack, because the things in there were already what she needed for survival. I didn't know why she needed punk music to survive, but she was a person who liked that genre.
Lussafir walked by Hillary's side, and when they met up to me, he walked around my feet and purred his head off like a time bomb. When the bus honked, we hopped in. we chose a booth in the middle of the bus. As we rode off, Lussafir sat in my lap as I pet his jet-black fur.
Due to evening traffic, we got off several hours later than expected, about 7pm.
We stopped by a set of shops that sold bridal trains, coffee, haircuts, and.... jumbo donuts? Judging from the title "Monster Donuts", I guess that's what they sold.
We saw a forest behind the square of stores. The pine trees grew the sunset cast a brilliant shadow on the pines. I would have stared at it for hours if Hillary hadn't bumped my shoulder. A brown wooden sign was staked to the ground. It read: Henry Park, Fort Lauderdale Florida. Citizens beware of wolves, snakes, and other natural occurrences.
"Err... nice place to have a civilized meeting." Hillary commented gruffly. "We could talk peacefully as a pack of wolves gnaw on my bones."
I snickered a little. It was nice to see that Hillary was back to her old, smart-allick, trouble-some self again. Lussafir got off the bus with us and remained purring around my legs.
"Come on," I urged. I started to walk over in to the forest when Hillary stopped me, her expression blank and serious, like a blank piece of paper. "Wait," she commanded.
No matter how stubborn I was, my muscles tightened and stopped me from moving any further. I turned around toward Hillary, impatiently. "What is it, Hill's?"
"I- I had a bad experience here long ago." She stammered. "I can't exactly remember it, but... it seemed to strike me as a bad thing. One thing I know is that a family member of mine was killed right in front of me."
Yeesh. Everything bad happens to us, doesn't it? "Sorry," I comforted.
Hillary shrugged it off, her face still saddened. She knelt down and opened the small chamber of her backpack. I was wondering what she had kept in there ever since the school bus. She reached in and pulled out a dagger that was about the size of my foot. The silver metal shined, and yet, it looked like it was made of water, glowing in a Blue-ish clear luster. Brown leather was wrapped neatly to make a handle.
Hillary stuck it through her belt and patted it. I stared at her in awe and confusion. "What's that for?" I asked cautiously.
"Protection," Hillary noted. "And here's some for you." She tossed me a ring out of her bag. When I caught it, the platinum felt cold to the touch. It was coal black with a silver cross-bone on top.
"Protection? From what?" I put the ring on. Well what do you know? It was a perfect fit around my ring finger, as if it was welded for me and me only.
"It will protect you from danger, Duh!" Hillary responded. "Just twist the crossbones on top when you need it," I reached for the crossbones to twist them out of curiosity, but Hillary waved her arms out in front of her. "NOT NOW!!!" she screamed. "Only do it when you need it most,"
