Chapter 3
“Alpha Benina, Alphas Georg and Xavier are requesting your presence in the pool.” One of Xavier’s pack members informed me.
“Inform them that I’m busy. They’ll understand why.” I ordered, watching as he closed the door behind himself.
I turned back to Tristan, who was sitting at the end of the conference table. It was just the two of us in the room, and I needed to talk over what being our spy meant, and what duties he would need to perform.
It had taken a while for Ani to let him join me in the room. She was convinced I was going to upset him, and her mothering instincts kicked in. I had to assure her that I wouldn’t hurt him. Much.
“Tristan, we’ve covered the basics, and I think that you need to see something.” I stated, opening the door and motioning for him to exit the room.
He nodded politely and followed me out into the yard. We passed the pool, and Xavier yelled out from the water, “What? You’re too busy to join us?”
I rolled my eyes as Georg replied, “She just doesn’t want to have to look at your face!”
The two began to wrestle about in the water, splashing innocent bystanders as they went. I chuckled lightly, but continued on my way, Tristan in tow as we headed to Kaz’s paddock.
“So, as you know,” I began as we made our way into his forest, “I have a ‘pet’ Rhino. He’s not really my pet, and I’ll explain that to you know. This is Kaz.” I told him as we reached the clearing.
Kaz was curled up in a ball, rolling from side to side on his back as he tried to scratch himself. When he saw me, he wriggled about to stand up, before trotting over and nuzzling my face.
Tristan backed away nervously and asked, “So, by ‘not exactly your pet’, you mean that he’s wild?”
Kaz and I snorted in unison.
“He’s my companion.” I stated simply.
Hey! Kaz hissed in my head, I can be wild when I want!
I chuckled at him, causing him to paw at the ground grumpily. I’ll show you wild… He muttered.
He suddenly charged at a tree, head-butting it right at the base. The trunk wobbled back and forth for a second, before snapping ad falling to the ground.
Tristan yelped and ducked behind me, whispering, “Get it away from me!” As Kaz trotted up to us proudly.
I laughed, pushing Tristan towards Kaz, telling him, “He won’t hurt you.”
Kaz menacingly stepped forward and shoved his snout right up to Tristan’s face. Tristan started to shake as he hyperventilated, eyes wide, standing still.
Kaz made a weird rumbling noise in his throat, leaning closer towards Tristan’s face, until they were only centimetres apart. “Is he growling?” Tristan squeaked.
“No, he’s-” I was cut off as Kaz suddenly sneezed all over Tristan’s face.
Tristan froze, before slowly raising a hand to wipe off his face. “-sneezing.” I finished.
