Chapter-5
Zhou was late. JingYu opened the text again. It read he’d be here in ten minutes, and he received it almost twenty five minutes ago. He frowned and tried not to let his paranoia get the better of him. Zhou was acting quite erratic lately. Snapping at him, zoning out, getting morose. It would be a lie if he said he did not know the reason. He did but there was nothing he could do. Zhou would not be able to grasp even if he tried to tell him what was happening with his life. And JingYu did not dare to dream that Zhou, being a human, would accept the love of a vampire without running for his life first.
But that boy was sad and it hurt JingYu.
“Hey!”
WeiZhou greeted him, panting, as he arrived.
“Sorry, I....” he huffed, still out of breath, “I got detained by a professor and there was traffic and....” He trailed off.
JingYu took WeiZhou’s backpack from him, “Did you run all the way?”
“Of course not!” WeiZhou protested. But seeing JingYu’s arched up eyebrow, he conceded, “Well, a bit. But what could I do? I was already late and didn’t want to keep you waiting.”
“I would have waited a bit longer, I don’t mind. I’ve been waiting for a long time anyway.”
Only after when WeiZhou asked with a surprised tone, “You have?” did JingYu realize what he had actually said. He bit his tongue.
Damnit. He was never able to hide himself from WeiZhou before, and the same was happening now also.
“Umm, yeah. I- it was nothing. Don’t think about it,” he tried to dismiss the slip as subtly as he could. He was prepared to face more questions from Zhou but the boy just stared at him for a moment longer and nodded in consent.
That was another new addition in WeiZhou’s behavioral pattern. He had stopped asking questions. It should have relieved JingYu, considering how carefully he avoided treading into certain territories, but he felt unsettled even more. It was alarming indeed when a generally outspoken, childish person altered their behaviour without making any point of it.
“Zhou?”
“Yeah?”
What would I say? It was I who made it clear that he wouldn’t get any answer before the right time. How can I broach the subject now?
“What is it?” WeiZhou asked again while taking out his water bottle from the bag that was currently on JingYu’s shoulder.
“Um..nothing..uh, where do you want to go today?”
“I’m starving,” he informed taking a gulp, voice going watery, “Can we go somewhere to eat?”
WeiZhou licked his lips to suck in the spilling droplets. JingYu’s eyes followed the movement, momentarily lost in the memories invoked by those lips.
